The LA Rams have a vacancy for a defensive backs coach. With the Denver Broncos telling DC Ejiro Evero that he is no longer being considered for their vacant head coach role, you have to wonder if his days with the Broncos are running out.

Well, whether or not that’s true, the LA Rams should be readying the welcome mat for the guy just in case. And while they are at it, another welcome mat for Broncos defensive line coach Marcus Dixon, the Rams’ former Assistant Defensive Line Coach in 2021.

Of course, there are plenty of coaching hires yet to take place, and the Denver Broncos themselves must assemble an entirely new coaching staff for their new head coach Sean Payton.

But neither Evero nor Dixon feel like Payton guys. What I mean is that Sean Payton has been in the NFL for many years, and has developed close relationships with other coaches over those years. Now that he has the reins of a new NFL team,  it makes sense that he would prefer to surround himself with coaches with whom he has long-standing relationships.

After all, he has a pretty daunting task in turning the Broncos franchise around and doing so with veteran QB Russell Wilson. While the LA Rams’ offense struggled, the Broncos’ offense fell off of a cliff, scoring less than an average of 17 points per game. That is why the Broncos went the extra mile to hire Sean Payton, a head coach who has a solid track record of customizing NFL offenses.

But will the Broncos stand pat on the defensive side of the football? I don’t think that will happen. Payton prefers an attacking defense that creates plenty of turnovers. While the Broncos’ defense was stingy in allowing opponents to score, they were not particularly effective at creating turnovers.  That may not be suited for what Payton has in mind for the team in 2023.

The Denver Broncos raided the LA Rams coaching staff for defensive positional coaches and promptly had one of the best defenses in the NFL. Turnabout is fair play, and the Rams would be foolish not to pounce on any Broncos defensive coaches who may be released as Sean Payton sets up his new staff.
