It's the final game of the 2025 preseason for the Los Angeles Rams. And it's another round of David versus Goliath, as the roster bubble players wearing Horns take on the starters of the Cleveland Browns. It's a clear mismatch. Embedded in the game remains the makings of plenty of hidden drama, if fans are willing to dig below the surface.
For LA fans, this is the debut of rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson, a player whose offseason build-up has created nearly unlimited pressure for him to show up and perform well. Unfortunately for the eager fanbase, he is unlikely to do so. He will face the Browns top defensive backs. Throughout the game, even as players rotate out, he will be up against their best pass defenders.
Perhaps the greater challenge is the fact that he must catch passes thrown by fourth-string quarterback Dresser Winn. It's almost impossible to determine how often this duo have worked together in training camp and through the preseason, but it's a safe bet to believe that it's not been often. And it's the lack of work that will keep the lid on how well Ferguson performs. So, which players have the potential to be the stars in Game 3?
3 Rams auditioning for new NFL teams in the preseason finale
The team makes no bones about the fact that the final preseason game is a showcase for players who are unlikely to remain with the team. To that end, the team quietly added former Rams IOL Mike McAlister, followed by a similarly sneaky addition of G John Leglue to ensure adequate depth on the offensive line for Game 3. But they arrived knowing that this was simply a short-term assignment.
Which players face their release who may attract interest from other NFL teams with a solid showing against the Browns? Here are three players who can help their NFL careers with a solid Game 3 performance.
(3) - WR/PR/KR Britain Covey
Britain Covey signed with the team after a phenomenal role with the Philadelphia Eagles as a top-tier punt returner. But in two preseason games, he has only returned one punt for two yards. On offense, he has made a bigger impact, hauling in five of eight passes for 45 yards. But on a very competitive roster, that was simply not enough. .
He is almost certainly on the roster release list, but if he puts up a solid performance in Game 3, he may attract interest from other NFL teams. He brings plenty of intrigue already, as a versatile performer who can upgrade both an NFL offense and punt return unit. If he can showcase either against the Browns, his agent's phone will ring off the hook.
(2) - ILB Tony Fields II
Veteran inside linebacker Tony Fields II has not garnered much positive buzz throughout training camp and the preseason. But after two games, he stands among the defensive leaders with 10 tackles. He stands 6-foot-0 and weighs 222 pounds, so he is one of the team's defenders who fits the mold of hybrid LB/Saf. But his strength lies in attacking any offensive player entering the heart of the defense.
He is a solid tackler, and offers great range. Those skills blend well into either a defensive role, or on a special team's coverage unit. If he shows up big in either the defense or in coverage, he will garner interest.
(1) - OT Trey Wedig
It's disappointing to name Indiana rookie offensive tackle Trey Wedig, but that is the fruit from a highly competitive roster. To counter the risks of both LT Alaric Jackson and RT Rob Havenstein getting injured this season, the team proactively signed both OT DJ Humphries and OT David Quessenberry. Since both are seasoned NFL veterans with plenty of starts, Wedig had an uphill battle to make the team.
Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 310 pounds, Wedig is ideally structured to compete as an NFL offensive tackle. Throughout the offseason, he never seemed to get enough reps or put up enough highlights to pry a roster spot away from veterans. He likely lost his chance with this team, but a solid performance against Browns starters will certainly skyrocket his stock as NFL teams jockey to assemble a well-rounded roster.
As always, thanks for reading.
