49ers' desperate Deebo Samuel reunion won't help them match the Rams

Even while the Los Angeles Rams wrestle with Aaron Donald's potential return, homecoming seems to be an NFC West theme as the San Francisco 49ers reunite with receiver Deebo Samuel. Rams fans are already eager to boo the cocky, trash-talking Niners poster child.

The 49ers are desperate to keep pace with LA. They were all but forced restock the roster after the news that Ricky Pearsall, a promising young wideout who unfortunately cannot seem to stay healthy, is expected to miss the entire season with a leg injury. In response, San Francisco turned to a familiar face in Samuel, who is also a familiar Rams foe.

Samuel is a versatile weapon but, in part due to his own injury woes, has only broken the 1000-yard plateau once in his seven-year career. After leaving San Fran in free agency following the 2024 season, he disappointed in his stint with the Commanders. His one-year sabbatical on the East Coast ends with Samuel positioned to reclaim his role in the Niners' offense.

Familiar foe won't faze new and improved Rams defense

Let's dismiss the hype that applauds Samuel's return to the Burgundy and Gold as a game-changing reunion. Samuel is versatile, yes. But he is oft-injured himself, missing at least a game every season. And his role in San Fran may be familiar, but he has struggled to rediscover his 2021 production.

Samuel was the Niners' best option. But the receiving corps has already lost Pearsall for the season. And veterans Mike Evans, Christian Kirk, Demarcus Robinson, and now Samuel have a history of being injury-prone themselves. As much as the Niner Gang looks good on paper, they are banking on a fragile group.

The Rams match up well. With an offense that erupted with multiple tight ends, a pair of running backs, and a dynamic duo at wide receiver, the Horns can score on any defense. And with their dramatic defensive upgrades, not every offense can score on LA.

One trait those upgrades have emphasized is physicality. By adding edge rusher Myles Garrett and cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, the Yellow and Blue already match up well against Samuel's physical style.

Samuel was never San Fran's first choice. He is simply the best contingency option general manager John Lynch could find. Ultimately, it simply means Rams fans get to boo the 49ers blowhard once more.
