When it comes to the Los Angeles Rams, timing is everything. Despite the abundance of youth lining up for DC Chris Shula on defense, this team's window of opportunity is driven by the guy under center. That is, veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford's final seasons playing for the Rams will dictate the current window of opportunity to earn another Lombardi Trophy. And the window is closing.
The team is close to a Super Bowl run. Oh, so close. And yet, the business of rebuilding the Rams roster for a new NFL season dilutes the certainty of any carry-over from 2024. This is a new year, with new opponents and new players. So it's not as simple as going back, Jack, and doing it again. Reforming the team brings opportunities to get better or get worse.
Right now, an opportunity to get better just popped up on the Rams radar. If the team understands Stafford's limited shelf life an an NFL starting quarterback, then a perfect opportunity to trade for an All-Pro defensive back just fell into the Rams lap. I am talking former Rams CB Jalen Ramsey, who finds himself on the trading block once more:
The #Dolphins and seven-time Pro Bowl CB Jalen Ramsey are mutually set to explore trade options and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he played elsewhere in 2025, per me and @TomPelissero.

Miami and Ramsey, due $25.1M fully guaranteed this season, could be parting ways. pic.twitter.com/rfbNDcNL6m
And you can bet that as Rams fans (and former players) wake up to the latest news, they are sititing up and taking notice:

While it was the Rams who traded Ramsey to the Dolphins, it was a much different team that did so. The Rams were coming off a 5-12 seasons, had overextended their salary cap commitments, were depleted of draft picks, and were in desperate need to shed cap space and veterans to afford cheaper and younger players to take root on the roster.
Two years later and the team is in much better shape. And it just so happens that the team needs to find a solid upgrade at cornerback to refine the entire secondary. Jalen Ramsey is not only quite familiar with the team's players and coaches, but he brings an ideal set of skills to enhance the team's ability to cover passes.
Ramsey is a huge cornerback, standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 208 pounds. Despite his size and physicality, he maintains a solid ability to defend both the run and the pass. At 30 years old, his clutch is beginning to slip, but he remains the best cornerback option for the Rams right now. This team needs quality at the position. Jalen Ramsey continues to be high quality.
Getting him back on the Rams roster won't be easy. The Rams traded him away for a Round 3 pick and TE Hunter Long. I suspect that the Rams should offer a Round 6 pick and either cornerback Emmanuel Forbes or Derion Kendrick. The thing is, Ramsey is 30 years old and his salary cap hit remains $21.1 million for any team that acquires him. For the Rams, the team would need to scrub existing contracts to come up with $10 million in savings in 2025. That could be done, but it would take time that the team does not have right now, this close to the draft.
Still, you have to expect the Rams to investigate. Ramsey was critical for the last Rams Super Bowl run, and the secondary would benefit greatly upon his return. Will the Rams pursue a trade to return Jalen Ramsey to the Rams? Stay tuned.
As always, thanks for reading.
