The Los Angeles Rams may be drafting a future quarterback successor to veteran starting quarterback Matthew Stafford. But it is not this day. While the Rams know that they need to plan and execute a true succession plan at the quarterback position, they are satisfied that their 2024 quarterback configuration of Matthew Stafford, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Stetson Bennett will do nicely in 2025.

Of course, the New Orleans Saints thought so before May 10, 2025, too.

The Saints knew that they faced uncertainty over the quarterback position heading into the 2025 NFL Draft. Veteran quarterback Derek Carr was struggling with a shoulder injury that many analysts feared would cause him to be placed on injured reserve for the entirety of the 2025 season. The team already had veteran QB Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler on the roster. But due to the expected surgery for Derek Carr, the team went ahead and drafted rookie QB Tyler Shough out of Louisville.

Tyler Shough was linked to the LA Rams as well.

The Saints were prepared for Carr to play or to recuperate in 2025. But I'm certain this outcome was not on their BINGO card. Rather than undergo surgery to reclaim 100 percent of his throwing arm mobility, Derek Carr is choosing to retire from the NFL.

As a result, the Saints' quarterback room appears to be three players suitable for a backup or reserve role in 2025, but certainly not a starting quarterback role:

So, why discuss the Saints shocking news on a Los Angeles Rams website?

It just so happens that the Rams host the New Orleans Saints at SoFI Stadium in 2025. Without Carr under center, that game now appears to be more winnable than ever.

But the Rams hold a huge stake in the outcome of the NFC South Division. With the Atlanta Falcons trading their 2026 Round 1 pick to the Rams for the 26th overall pick, the Rams are cheering for the Saints, the Carolina Panthers, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to defeat the Falcons in both scheduled games. The Falcons were 4-2 in divisional play in 2024, losing once to the Saints and once to the Panthers.

The Saints do not currently appear to be as competitive in the NFC South Division, which could adversely impact the draft order when the Falcons' Round 1 pick appears.

Only two veteran quarterbacks who could move the needle for the Saints appear to be available right now. One is free agent veteran QB Aaron Rodgers, a player who many expect to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The other is Kirk Cousins, who is currently under contract with the Falcons. But the chances of the Falcons trading Cousins to the Saints to help out a Division rival are almost zero.

With this news, the Rams may win the battle at SoFi Stadium against the New Orleans Saints. But unless the Saints get unexpectedly competitive production out of one of their unimpressive quarterbacks, the team could lose the war when the 2026 NFL Draft arrives.
