The 10-3 Los Angeles Rams are in a unique position today. The team has been fighting back from behind nearly the entire game against the 8-5 Detroit Lions. But this one is jam-packed with offense and sorely lacking in defense. So, any injury to an offensive line is a big deal. An injury to left tackle Alaric Jackson was the last thing the Rams needed.
The injury to the blindside offensive tackle could not have happened at a worse time. The Rams faced second-and-10 from their own 12-yard line. The play resulted in a nine-yard completion to wide receiver Puka Nacua. But the play also resulted in an injury to Jackson, who headed to the sideline.
Veteran D.J. Humphries entered the game to assume Jackson's role.
Thankfully, the undrafted left tackle returned to the football field two plays later. And his return appeared to galvanize the entire offense. When he left the game, Los Angeles was buried deep in its territory. After he returned, the offense exploded for 14 points, pushing the team to a solid 10-point lead.
7:54 remaining in the fourth quarter
Detroit Lions 27
Los Angeles Rams 34
Rams offense springing to life in must-win game
The Rams have been fighting from behind nearly the entire game. But after allowing 24 points in the first half, the defense has been a bit stingier in the third quarter. Will the defense remain rigid? It's difficult to determine. This game has been fraught with big plays, big mistakes, and lead changes.
Jackson is back on the football field, but this has been an uncharacteristically bad game for the offensive line. Not only has it surrendered two quarterback sacks, but center Coleman Shelton has been wildly inaccurate on several shotgun hikes, one of which was barely handled by quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Both the Rams and the Lions need the win. LA will get the football and has to either score once more or kill the remaining time on the clock. Stay Tuned.
And as always, thanks for reading.
