Andrew Whitworth's reminder to 'relax' is one Rams fans needed to hear

The morning after his old team was humiliated on Thursday Night Football, Former Los Angeles Rams tackle Andrew Whitworth had some valuable advice for NFL fans everywhere, including himself. 

"To anyone who needs to hear this… After these first two games (me🤣 ) or after this weekend. R-E-L-A-X!"

His message wasn't just about the Rams' 27-7 flop against the 49ers. Whitworth also addressed the Patriots' loss the night before, when 2025 MVP runner-up Drake Maye was outplayed by Seahawks backup Drew Lock.

Whitworth went on to remind the world that, last season in Week 1, New England fell to a Raiders squad that would end up going 3-14. The Patriots made the Super Bowl. 

Has it been long enough, a mere 36 or so hours from utter embarrassment, for Rams fans to receive his insights? Frankly, many of us don't want to hear it. The game was that bad. How can we relax? How does that performance merit anything that could be perceived as an excuse? 

Rams' Week 1 disaster isn't the end of the world?

Many of the LA faithful may need a bit more time to wallow, but let's face it, Whitworth's post is the medicine we needed. He's right, and not just about the Rams. The message is a vomit-instructions bag for many a fanbase about to be disappointed or beat down this weekend. In other words, go ahead and puke, but wipe your mouth and take some deep breaths afterward. It's going to be okay.

Of course, it may be difficult to top LA's lackluster lollygagging. Disgusted or deflated, perhaps Rams fans needed Whitworth's counsel more than anyone.

That nightmare of a season opener followed the surreal fervor of an all-time offseason, capped by Aaron Donald's heralded return. The prize of the Rams' exploits, two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett, was utterly neutralized by 38-year-old left tackle Trent Williams. Reigning MVP Matthew Stafford, on the other hand, who is also 38, looked his age. 

All of which makes Whitworth worth listening to. Will Garrett look like that again? Hopefully, and very probably not. Stafford will be 10 days older when the Rams take on the Giants next Monday, but he's unlikely to come off as flat as that. All things considered, it was his worst game in four years. 

It's also worth noting, as others have already pointed out, that the Horns have a history of starting slow. 3-2 last season, en route to a 12-5 finish. 1-4 the year before, 10-7 season record. 3-5 in 2023, 10-7 again. Perhaps this, combined with a 17-hour flight to Australia, was only more of the same.
