The end of an era is upon us, as Cooper Kupp shared on Monday that the Los Angeles Rams informed him they're planning to trade him. Rams fans are devastated by this, of course, but all good things must come to an end and for a Rams team that's desperate to get back to a Super Bowl, parting ways with Kupp isn't the craziest thought.
First and foremost, Kupp is 31 years old and has battled injuries the past three seasons. After playing in every game during his epic 2021 campaign, Kupp has missed at least five games in each of the past three years. He's still a good player but the Rams clearly have decided that it's time for a youth movement on the offensive side of the ball.
Second, Kupp is expensive and the Rams might be looking to shed some of that cap space by sending him to another team that's open to taking on the contract. The Rams also have other talented players on offense that they might feel give them just as good of a chance to win big games.
Rams could be pivoting toward a youth movement with Cooper Kupp trade news
The Rams' offense isn't hopeless without Kupp and that's something that needs to be said here. Puka Nacua is still on the team and he's emerged as one of the most exciting wide receivers in the league (he was also stunned by the news of Kupp's eventual departure). The team also has promising running backs, including Kyren Williams and Blake Corum.
If the contract situation with Matthew Stafford gets worked out and he's back under center for the Rams in 2025, then this team has a shot to win. As long as Stafford is the quarterback, the Rams are trying to win and are always going to be a Super Bowl contender, with or without Kupp catching passes from him. Stafford truly is a key component to if the Rams decide to do more of a rebuild or if they reload instead.
It'll be sad to no longer see Kupp in the Rams blue and yellow but fans will always remember his efforts during his time with the team and for what he did in Super Bowl LVI. The guy is a Rams legend for sure.
