Los Angeles Rams kicker Harrison Mevis was 0-for-2 on field goal attempts in Monday's overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills. Bills kicker Tyler Bass was a perfect 3-for-3 on his field goal attempts. That works out to a 15-point difference in a game decided by three points.
Given Mevis' struggles it comes as no surprise that general manager Les Snead acted with lightning speed, signing his third kicker in two years. This time it's New York Jets kicker Blake Grupe, who is coming off their practice squad.
Unlike Mevis, affectionately known as "The Thiccer Kicker", Grupe is a slender 5-foot-7, 156-pound veteran who spent three seasons with the Saints from 2023 to 2025. He was picked up by the Colts in 2025 and signed with the Jets in 2026.
He failed to win the starting job, but now he'll get his shot with the Rams.
Rams get Blake Grupe, but don't rule out more competiion just yet
Let's make some quick introductions. Kicker Blake Grupe clocked in as the 29th-ranked kicker ahead of the season. Ironically, that was just one spot behind Bass.
Grupe has made 86 of 105 career field goals (81.6 percent). But he made all 11 field goal attempts for the Colts in 2025, and he has also made 96 of 98 extra points.
He'll serve an immediate need for Los Angeles.
Unfortunately, he has made just over 72 percent of his 40+ yard field goals.
"But even with a 60-yarder under his belt, he’s more of an undersized, accuracy-first option whose average make came from 38.3 yards," reads his kicker-ranking analysis from FanSided.
That's going to be a concern over the course of the season. But after Mevis missed two in Week 5, anything feels like an upgrade.
This is a first attempt to address the problem. Don't be surprised if LA adds another kicker to compete for a more permanent solution.
As always, thanks for reading.
