Bleacher Report trade idea could help Rams fix a risky problem

This might be another big swing the Rams need to make.

The Los Angeles Rams are fortunate to have a quarterback of Matthew Stafford's caliber. The long-time NFL vet is coming off an MVP season, and hopefully, in 2026, he can help lead the Rams back to the Super Bowl.

Starting quarterback isn't a problem in Los Angeles. The backup position is, however, but Moe Moton of Bleacher Report thinks he has the perfect solution for the Rams entering a crucial 2026 campaign. Moton proposed that the Rams should trade for the current Houston Texans backup quarterback, Davis Mills.

"The Rams haven't re-signed Jimmy Garoppolo, and Stetson Bennett IV hasn't developed much in a third-string role. If Stafford misses time, Los Angeles would need a veteran to keep its offense steady.

General manager Les Snead should call the Houston Texans to inquire about Davis Mills, who went 3-0 as a fill-in starter for C.J. Stroud last season."

Hmmm.

Bleacher Report proposes Rams trade for backup QB Davis Mills

This is a solid idea, especially since the Rams have shown they're all-in on winning a championship this year with the offseason they've had so far. If Stafford gets injured and Jimmy Garoppolo isn't back as QB2, is that a wrap on the Rams' Super Bowl hopes? Adding Mills would give them a solid backup if Stafford has to miss time.

Having a reliable backup can be a huge factor in how a season plays out, and clearly, Mills knows what it takes to win when he's been called upon. As Moton noted, Mills went 3-0 in 2025 when filling in for C.J. Stroud. While the Texans didn't win the division, Houston still made the playoffs, and that might not have happened if Mills hadn't played well as the backup.

Moton did mention that Houston might not want to give up Mills, considering Stroud's missed time in two of his three seasons so far. That being said, Mills is entering the final year of his rookie deal, so if the Texans want to get anything for him, now would be the time to trade him and get something in return.

Maybe the Rams end up bringing Garoppolo back and he remains Stafford's backup, but if that doesn't work out, Mills feels like a good fallback plan. Go big or go home, right? These are the moves Super Bowl contenders have to make to remain in that category.
