The LA Rams are heading for the final three games of the season, and their work is certainly cut out for them. After all, this is still not a 'we're done,' moment in terms of the LA Rams roster. The Rams want to bring back veteran tight end Tyler Higbee. The thing is, when will he return? I suspect that he will take the football field in Week 16 on the road against the New York Jets.
But Higbee is not the only player who hopes to pivot his bench time to playing time, as versatile and productive defensive back Cobie Durant is eager to join his teammates in Week 16 as well. But that may or may not happen this week. You see, the Rams secondary had their arguably best game of the season in Week 15. And the thing is, that was the week that CB Cobie Durant sat out with a bruised lung.
It was the rest of the Rams secondary who stepped up in Week 15.
And so, the Rams roster is about to undergo unexpected and perhaps unnecessary upheaval once more. For DB Cobie Durant, he merely needs to change his gameday status. But for TE Tyler Higbee, the team will need to create an open roster slot for him. and that can be a challenge this time of year:
Let's be clear. Cobie Curant is very effective at pass coverage, perhaps the best there is on the Rams roster. And he proved it in Week 14 as his teammates were shredded by the Buffalo Bills and QB Josh Allen:
But the Rams secondary was on fire against the San Francisco 49ers. They shut them all down, and did so in such a way that they were deceptively good. Can the same group of defensive backs play at that level as Durant returns? He may not be back for Week 16, but he will almost certainly return in Week 17, as the Rams face the Arizona Cardinals in an incredibly important game for the top spot in the NFC West Division.
As far as making room for Tyler Higbee? It seems that an untimely injury to backup OLB Nick Hampton will end his season, sending him to IR and creating an open roster slot for Higbee right now:
Will the Rams make the moves now?
With three games remaining on the schedule and the Rams on the road to face the pesky New York Jets this week, I expect if either or both Higbee and Durant are ready to go, they will be playing. The Rams are running out of time, and that means every week is all hands on deck until this season is over.
With any luck, and a lot of work, it will be enough to secure the ninth win of the season.
As always, thanks for reading.
