It is never wise to raise expectations for any rookie because you simply have no idea how the depth chart will sort itself out throughout many, many practices. And that is particularly true when trying to set realistic expectations for rookies vying for playing time in this offense. So it's difficult to set reasonable expectations for Los Angeles Rams rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson. But that's why we'll take a shot at it now.
That's where the fun is.
The Rams' front office finally scored on a tight end. While the team may have preferred others, it's impossible to claim that the team was not fully sold on Oregon rookie TE prospect Terrance Ferguson when the Rams selected him with the 46th overall pick. Video footage of the Rams' draft experience during the 2025 NFL Draft proved that the team did not settle on a consolation prize.
The entire Behind the Grind episode 2 is worth watching. But the part about drafting TE Terrance Ferguson reveals the true level of trust and camaraderie between GM Les Snead and HC Sean McVay shows up at 17:00.
And with the 46th overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams select Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson.
Ferguson packs Rams offense with production potential
When it comes to NFL tight ends, some can block very effectively, while still managing to catch passes. The Rams seemed to be loaded with that category of tight ends with Hunter Long, Colby Parkinson, and Davis Allen. But the NFL also has passing catching tight ends who can block. And it's fair to consider veteran Tyler Higbee in that category.
And from all draft profiles, the Rams believe Terrance Ferguson is an ideal rookie in that pass-catching tight end category as well. And camp buzz is already building about him. He is a solid producer, a go-get-that-football type of receiver.
Has Ferguson impressed his coaches? Absolutely. Rams Offensive Coordinator Mike LaFleur has this to say about his rookie tight end:
"(The NFL is) just not too big for (Terrance Ferguson). He just has that look in his eye, and (he is a) real smart kid schematically. Picked (the offense) up no problem in the spring. And then just kind of the review, as we have done these last few days, really picked up right where he left off in terms of schematics"OC Mike LaFleur
The pads haven't gone on yet, so the best display of Ferguson's ability to catch passes in traffic is still at the dress rehearsal stage. But he has already proven to have a nose for the end zone, an instinctive feel to find soft spots in zone coverage, and soft hands that snatch the football out of the air.
Camp buzz is building fast around Rams rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson for all the right reasons. That shouldn't come as a surprise, as Coach McVay was a tight end coach with the Washington Commanders long before taking over as the head coach of the Rams. He still has a fine eye for TE talent.
As always, thanks for reading.
