The LA Rams have managed to lure a veteran quarterback with a tarnished reputation to serve as a backup quarterback in each of the past three seasons. In 2022, the team claimed former Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield. In 2023, the team signed free-agent quarterback Carson Wentz. In 2024, the team signed free-agent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Carson Wentz suited up for one game for the Rams, a Week 18 showdown with the San Francisco 49ers in which the Rams played their junior varsity against the 49ers varsity players (at least through much of the game). The Rams thrillingly won that game by a score of 21-20. And it was that game that calmed my fears about the future of the Rams roster since Matthew Stafford is getting up in years.
Wentz threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third touchdown in a game in which the Rams found themselves trailing by 13 points at halftime.
After the game, Rams fans were optimistic that Wentz would re-sign with the team. Beating the San Francisco 49ers is a solid path to Rams fans' hearts, and Wentz engineered the victory with flair and calm demeanor. So why did the Rams let him walk?
Carson Wentz lays a goose egg for the Kansas City Chiefs
Fast forward to Week 18 of the 2024 NFL season, and Carson Wentz finds himself starting once again. Unlike his 2023 NFL season start, this time he is not facing the 12-4 San Francisco 49ers, but the 9-7 Denver Broncos. In that game, Wentz did not have much hope of winning, but he did have expectations of delivering some offensive firepower, as he had for the Rams in 2023. But, his efforts in that game did not cross the end zone plane once.
The Broncos demolished the Kansas City Chiefs by the score of 38-0.
Of the two teams, Carson Wentz is the only former Rams player in position to impact the outcome of the game. But it's quite clear that no Kansas City Chiefs fans wants it to come down to that. With Patrick Mahomes under center, the Chiefs have a strong chance of winning. With Wentz, all hope dissipates like fog on a sunny day.
Wentz may have looked the part of an NFL starting quarterback when suiting up for the Rams in Week 18. But that mirage faded when he suited up for the Kansas City Chiefs one year later. As far as the outcome of Super Bowl LIX, experts are torn in their predictions over when the Chiefs three-peat, or the Eagles dethrone the defendin NFL Champions.
The game is getting underway. As long as Patrick Mahomes is upright, the Chiefs have a solid chance for winning. If he falls to injury, don't expect Carson Wentz to pull of the win. He is unlikely to do so without Rams HC Sean McVay on the sidelines calling his offensive plays.
As always, thanks for reading.
