While the LA Rams may not help themselves to the first players off the board in the 2022 NFL Draft, they will not exactly be scrounging the draft board for worthwhile prospects. The 2022 NFL Draft class is robust with talent, with NFL starting quality players running well into the deep rounds of Day 3.

While many fans view the eight picks currently held by the Rams as little to get that excited about, keep in mind that in the hands of the Nerds Nest (the LA Rams data analytics department), those picks have nearly as much impact as the Day 2 picks of other NFL teams.

For example, the LA Rams appear to have landed 2021 NFL season starters in last year’s draft from round 3 with inside linebacker Ernest Jones and in round 4 with defensive back Robert Rochell. The team even got playing time out of the seventh round as wide receiver Ben Skowronek saw playing time through the season and even in Super Bowl LVI.

Of course, the success for any team whose majority of draft picks fall on Day 3 will be limited to random chance. Regardless of how well the Rams have scouted, analyzed, and set up their draft board, they will be completely dependent upon who falls to them in the NFL draft. While trying to guess who that might be at this early juncture will only incense commentors whose favorite targets in the draft fit that description now, we all know on draft day that some highly regard rookies will fail to hear their name called as early as expected.

And so, the LA Rams can be patient and wait.  Is it harder to wait for other teams to cycle through their choices multiple times before making a selection? Or is it simply easier to watch some of the brightest and most gifted college football players tumble right into your lap, and simply call out their name as the entire NFL fanbase floods social media and implores their team to trade to the next selection in the draft to select their favored players?

I don’t have the answer. But I do know that some very special players will fall to the Rams in this draft. When that happens, you can look for us on social media, begging the Rams to select our favorite players alongside everyone else. Hey, we’re fans too.
