Chargers' Cameron Dicker is Rams kicker who got away (and yes, it stings)

In 2022, the Los Angeles Rams signed rookie placekicker Cameron Dicker to the training camp roster. 'Dicker the Kicker' was a unicorn of sorts, a player who could kick field goals, boot the ball from a tee, and punt. At the time, Los Angeles was very satisfied with Matt Gay. Veteran punter Riley Dixon was less secure in his role.

Unfortunately, Dicker's role in college dueling as the punter and kicker meant he didn't get experience as a holder. The Rams wanted someone who could hold field goals for Matt Gay. Dicker did not make the team.

But his NFL career was just getting started. He would not get a chance to kick field goals until November 2022 with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Since taking over there, Dicker has been one of the league's most accurate legs, converting 127 of 134 field goal tries and going 126 of 130 on extra points. He has anchored the Chargers' special teams with dependable kicking.

Meanwhile, the Horns have cycled through seven different placekickers. Joshua Karty, Lucas Havrisik, and Bret Maher are among those who appeared in a game. Ah, fond memories.

Cameron Dicker may be Rams kicker who got away

The Rams purged their special teams unit after a dismal 2022 season. As a result, the they were willing to roll the dice on new kickers, long snappers, and punters. And while LA re-invested in special teams play this offseason, the Chargers are happy with the job Dicker is doing.

Rams fans are left wondering whether he is one who got away. Last season's struggles are still fresh in mind.

Gay was the reason LA felt comfortable releasing Dicker. But Gay's contract expired a year later. Meanwhile, Dicker the Kicker busily established himself as one of the NFL's elite.

Still, don't discount the Horns' own kicker Harrison Mevis, who missed only one field goal a year ago. The Rams haven't exactly pushed him, but Mevis converted every opportunity during the preseason.

Fans have had plenty of reasons to second-guess the front office in the past. Drafting receiver Tutu Atwell despite needing an interior offensive lineman (e.g., Creed Humphries) is just one of several examples. Even as one of the NFL's best general managers, Les Snead is not infallible.

Dicker made the Pro Bowl in 2025. Rams fans would love to see such honors for someone on LA's special teams roster. Until that happens, it's safe to say Dicker is the kicker who got away.
