The Los Angeles Rams identified their biggest weakness from a season ago and attacked it hard this offseason. After trading for Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie, the Rams didn't stop there, signing McDuffie's Chiefs teammate Jaylen Watson to a three-year deal worth $51 million.
McDuffie was a big enough name in the league, but Watson might not have been someone fans were as familiar with. Yes, he played for the high-profile Chiefs and won two Super Bowls with them, but when people thought of the Chiefs defense during those runs, McDuffie or Chris Jones likely came to mind.
Matt Conner of Arrowhead Addict, FanSided's Chiefs site, offered some insight on Watson that will help Rams fans familiarize themselves more with their new cornerback. It's insight that Rams fans will be delighted to hear.
"Jaylen Watson has climbed the Chiefs' depth chart from former seventh-round flyer providing rotational reps to impact starter for a Super Bowl contender. He learned from L'Jarius Sneed and flourished when he left, providing a very physical boundary presence with real blitzing ability. The Chiefs draft-and-develop reputation is strong enough that they'll let him leave for a big payday, but the success of Charvarius Ward points the way toward future expectations here."
Rams fans will like what Chiefs expert had to say about Jaylen Watson
This is the analysis Rams fans needed to know after the signing. While Watson was a seventh-round pick in 2022, he was able to work his way up the depth chart in Kansas City and become a game-changer for them. That's the exact type of player Chris Shula needs for his defense, especially after the secondary was such a weakness for L.A.
Watson helps bring an experience in big games to the Rams secondary. The Rams want to get back to the Super Bowl, somewhere they haven't been since 2022, and Watson is no stranger to playing in those. He won two titles with the Chiefs in the 2022 and 2023 seasons and appeared in a third one during the 2024 season.
If the Rams can make it back to the Super Bowl this upcoming season, Watson knows how to perform on that stage. Rams fans should be elated that he's joining McDuffie in Los Angeles and it's clear that Chiefs fans are bummed he's leaving Kansas City. The Chiefs' loss is the Rams' gain.
