The chance to transplant not one but two Chiefs cornerbacks was an alley-oop slam dunk that Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead could not resist. Not only did it provide the most efficient solution to a huge question mark from last season, but preserving the Kansas City duo's inherent chemistry gives LA a huge head start in 2026.
Shopping the trade and free-agent markets, the last roster anyone would anticipate stealing from would be Kansas City's. After all, while the 2025 Chiefs slid to a 6-11 finish, the 2022-23 repeat champions are already projected to bounce back. Recovering from a down year is much easier to accomplish with veterans.
But the Chiefs encountered a financial squeeze that all teams ultimately face. With restricted flexibility, they elected to invest elsewhere. The front office had already decided to let Jaylen Watson test free agency. Exporting Trent McDuffie to LA ensured Kansas City would have the draft ammunition to replenish their secondary with rookies.
The Chiefs don't pay fair market value for CBs, but the Rams certainly do
NFL GMs artfully distribute limited salary cap dollars. To see that on full display, you need only observe how teams pay various positional groups. For their part, the Rams tend to invest heavily in offense. At the same time, however, they have not hesitated to pay elite cornerbacks.
Back in 2019, they acquired Jalen Ramsey from the Jacksonville Jaguars. In 2026, McDuffie. In both cases, the transaction was possible because the trading team had no interest in paying fair market value to retain their star defender. And in both cases, Les Snead immediately went to work hammering out a post-trade contract extension at a reasonable price.
Los Angeles values cornerbacks. In 2026, Snead heard opportunity knocking once more. The Rams obviously needed to upgrade. Pillaging Kansas City's secondary allowed them to secure both starters, one via trade and one via free agency, in the same offseason. That was a layup Snead could not pass up.
In the aftermath, the Chiefs brought back former KC corner L'Jarius Sneed to help stabilize the rotation. That signing does little to address uncertainty about how their defense will hold up. The Rams, meanwhile, have answered any questions about their own cornerback room, at least at the top of the depth chart.
As always, thanks for reading.
