While the LA Rams have 'their guy' in veteran QB Matthew Stafford, the team has to stop, look, and listen now that the team is crossing over from 2024 to the 2025 NFL season. While the team has managed to reconnect with their starter, the quarterback room is nowhere close to being filled for the 2025 Rams training camp. As it now stands, the Rams are only 50 percent of the way towards a full complement of quarterbacks for 2025.
While the team has many options at their disposal, one main concern is whether or not the team has plans to re-sign backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for 2025, and perhaps beyond. And so, a recent press conference held with Los Angeles Rams Head Coach Sean McVay afforded LA Times reporter Gary Klein posed the question about Coach McVay and his regard to Jimmy Garoppolo.
At the 11:40 mark, Coach McVay talks about Jimmy Garoppolo, and puts his interest to get Jimmy G back with the team on record:
When asked, here is how Coach Mcvay responded:
"Yeah, we would love to bring him (Jimmy Garoppolo) back. I obviously have been very busy working through the Matthew Stafford situation, and so that is the hope and anticipation. Now, you guys know that there may be some other interest and Jimmy has earned the right to be able to have that type of interest, but yes. If you said, would I want Jimmy back here to be able to work in the quarterback room with (Coach) Dave Ragone and Matthew (Stafford), the answer is absolutely yes."Coach Sean McVay
That answer is a bit telling. For openers, the fact that Coach McVay 'absolutely yes,' wants Jimmy Garoppolo back with the team is a huge endorsement as the 2025 NFL Free Agency market nears.
Why is Jimmy Garoppolo a key piece to Rams 2025 puzzle?
The Rams were thrilled with Jimmy Garoppolo in 2024. Not only did he anchor the team as the primary backup QB, but he excelled at running the scout team offense to prepare the Rams' young defense for game day. Best of all, when he led the junior varsity squad against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 18, he possessed a seamless command of the offense.
All the while, he was throwing to backup receivers.
Perhaps even more promising is the fact that there has been significant buzz surrounding many veteran quarterbacks. But so far, not much buzz surrounds Jimmy Garoppolo. Could the Rams luck out and be the best offer on the table for him in 2025? A team-friendly contract would be a huge development for a backup quarterback this season, particularly as the team has entered into a one-year-at-a-time mode for Stafford as he has crossed 37 years old.
Is Jimmy Garoppolo's extension next in the queue? While I think the Rams would prefer that, the team is almost certainly expecting Garoppolo to test the free agency market, knowing that he has a place on the Rams roster if he should so choose. And for now, that may simply be as good as it gets.
As always, thanks for reading.
