Coleman Shelton is the unsung hero driving Rams' success in the trenches

Los Angeles Rams center Coleman Shelton is unlikely to make any fan's priority list of extension candidates. But digging a bit deeper reveals Shelton's impact. After all, it's tough to judge one offensive lineman without judging the entire group. Once you factor that in, Shelton appears vital.

To be clear, even the Rams front office did not view Shelton as vital. The team let walk away as a free agent in 2024. But after Shelton spent a season starting for the Chicago Bears, general manager Les Snead promptly re-signed him. And since his return, LA has boasted one of the best offensive lines in the NFL.

In 2025, the Horns boasted the NFL's top-scoring offense. While quarterback Matthew Stafford was enjoying his MVP season, the offensive line allowed a league-low 23 quarterback sacks.

Meanwhile, LA's rushing attack clocked in as the seventh-best in the league. That level of production comes from a stalwart offensive line. And a stalwart offensive line starts with an outstanding center.

Shelton has been an unsung hero of LA's offense since returning ahead of the 2025 season. But that's nothing new. With Shelton starting at center from 2021 through 2023, Rams running backs fared much better than without him. Since his return, the run game has been superb.

That has carried over into this season, with Kyren Williams and Blake Corum combining for 259 yards in two games, on 5.8 yards per carry. It's early, but Shelton has PFF's top run-blocking grade among 32 qualified centers, at 87.3.

Shelton isn't the biggest lineman on the team, but he is a savvy, swivel-headed center who knows how to call blocking schemes and who loves to road-grade the way for running backs into the secondary. He often leads a convoy of blockers into the heart of defenses.

It's easy not to notice. For starters, offensive linemen don't impact the box score. Pass block win-rate, pressure rate, and PFF grades don't strike everyone's fancy, and interpreting the data can involve more subjectivity than for skill players.

Plus, fantasy football has yet to incorporate them into their scoring algorithms. Without visibility, few fans dig deep enough to appreciate Shelton's contributions.

Shelton isn't an All-Pro, but he is the glue guy who helps make this offense run. With his contract up at year's end, perhaps that will be enough to warrant an extension.
