Monday evening, the NFL world had already seen one major trade missile fired earlier in the day. But, that didn't stop the news from coming. As it turns out, the LA Rams are indeed seeking to trade wide receiver Cooper Kupp this offseason.
This news, of course, came after the big trade request from Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett.
During Super Bowl week, the league doesn't sleep.
The writing seemed to be on the wall for Kupp, knowing his age, injury concerns and contract. Last year, before the trade deadline, he was a candidate to be dealt. Now, it seems like only a matter of time.
With Kupp's impending trade, what do the Rams do at the position other than bank on Puka Nacua? They certainly have some options, along with questions to answer about current free agents of their own.
3 particular Rams free agent receivers could benefit from the Cooper Kupp trade news
Tutu Atwell
Of all three, Tutu Atwell is the only one who was drafted by the Rams. For those who might not remember, Atwell cost a significant draft pick as he was taken in the second round back in 2021. This past season, Atwell posted career numbers in less overall snaps than he had in 2023.
His efficiency and usage was up considerably when he was on the field, catching 42 passes for 562 yards. Although the end zone evaded him, Atwell was still an integral part of the offense at times. He posted career highs in not only receptions and receiving yards, but yards per target (9.1) and catch percentage (67.7 percent).
Because of his tenure in Los Angeles and steady improvement, not to mention his original draft cost, it would not be surprising to see him extended.
More Rams news:
Demarcus Robinson
Speaking of efficiency, Demarcus Robinson has been exactly that in his two seasons with the Rams. After only playing 36 percent of offensive snaps in 2023, his usage rose dramatically to 82 percent of snaps in 2024.
He caught 31 passes for 505 yards and a whopping seven touchdowns. Yes, for those counting at home, that's basically one touchdown for every four receptions. He had a nose for the end zone and a strong rapport with Stafford, and should be a great candidate to come back for 2025.
Tyler Johnson
When the injuries took both Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp out earlier in the 2024 season, it was Tyler Johnson who originally stepped up and showed some promise. But, it didn't last long. As Robinson and Atwell started taking on more responsbility, and rookie Jordan Whittington got involved, Johnson seemed to fade.
Of all three of these receivers, Johnson might be the least likely to return. Although, he'd come very cheap and he knows the offense.
