Believe it or not, the Los Angeles Rams had a surplus of offensive linemen talent as the team pivoted from 2024 to 2025. With the team dealing with multiple injuries across the front five, the Rams roster had to improvise, depending on young players and rookies to step up quickly to plug holes left by injured veterans. One such rookie who stepped up to fill a starting role in 2024 is center Beaux Limmer. And he did well enough to secure the starting position through 2024 and into 2025.

That certainly complicated matters for veteran IOL Jonah Jackson. While signing to a somewhat team-friendly deal to play for the Rams in 2024, his compensation was meant to pay for a starter, not a backup. And with the Rams filling the offensive line interior with LG Steve Avila, C Beaux Limmer, and RG Kevin Dotson, Jonah Jackson understood that he had become the overpaid backup for 2025. That meant one of two things had to happen.

Either Jonah Jackson would eventually be approached by the team's front office to willingly accept a pay cut to reflect his backup role on the Rams roster. Or he could seek another NFL team in need of a starting offensive guard, and persuade them to trade with the Rams for the right to add him to that roster.

Well, the Rams gave him permission, he found a team willing to trade for him, and the Chicago Bears have found a projected starting offensive guard to add to their roster for a Round 6 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Just to contrast this deal, the Rams agreed to send a Round 4 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and a Round 5 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for G Kevin Dotson, a Round 5 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and a Round 6 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

So the Rams continue the pattern of trading away players for next to nothing.

Still, the addition of another Round 6 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft is a welcome addition for the team. That additional pick will give the Rams eight picks, broken out as follows:

  • Round 1 - 1 pick
  • Round 2 - traded (for Braden Fiske)
  • Round 3 - 2 picks
  • Round 4 - 1 pick
  • Round 5 - traded (for Kevin Dotson)
  • Round 6 - four picks
  • Round 7 - traded (sent with Van Jefferson for Falcons Round 6 pick)

With eight picks, the Rams front office has additional flexibility to trade up, stand pat, or even bank picks in future drafts be surrendering picks this year.
