When the Los Angeles Rams signed veteran wide receiver Davante Adams, the hope was that he would put up 1000+ receiving yards, while contributing somewhere along his average of nine touchdown receptions. Well, after 12 games, Adams is on track to end the season with just 950 yards. But he is on track to haul in 20 touchdown passes.
And for the first season of this seasoned veteran's career, it's obvious that even he is surprised at how easily scoring has come this year. 14 touchdowns in 12 games, four games with multiple scores, and nine of 12 games with at least one touchdown? That's certainly one way to announce to the NLF that you are still very dangerous.
This is Adams' 12th NFL season. His touchdown total matches or dwarfs his full-season touchdown totals in all but one season. He scored 18 times in 14 games played in 2020 for the Green Bay Packers. If he puts up four more touchdowns over the next two games, he will have matched that insanely productive season.
He currently sits in third place for the NFL's All-Time NFL Single-Season Touchdown Receptions. The record is held by Jerry Rice with 23 TD receptions. His 14 touchdowns already have him at 38th place on the list.
His 117 TDs are good for seventh place on the NFL's All-Time Career Touchdown Receptions list. He could be among the NFL's Top Four career touchdown reception leaders by the end of 2026 at this pace.
How does Davante Adams compare to other offensive stars for McVay?
Let's put this all into perspective. In 2017, running back Todd Gurley scored 25 touchdowns: 13 on the ground and 12 through the air. In 2018, Gurley rushed for 17 touchdowns while catching five TD passes. In 2019, Gurley scored 12 times. Cooper Kupp hauled in 16 TD receptions in 2021. In 2024, running back Kyren Williams rushed for 14 touchdowns and caught two more.
But in 2025, after just 12 games, Adams has already caught 14 touchdowns.
After Los Angeles was willing to part ways with veteran wide receivers Cooper Kupp (6 TDs), Demarcus Robinson (7 TDs), and Tyler Johnson (1 TD), the offense needed to find ways to restore touchdowns in 2025 in 205 targets.
Ironically, Adams has already done so, in less than half the number of targets (99).
If you needed hard proof that Adams is indeed an upgrade for 2025, you now have it. And we've just scratched the surface. Adams has made a significant impact on his teammates. On other receivers, they've learned to master creating separation off the line of scrimmage. On defensive backs, Adams has mentored them on how to provide stickier and more effective pass coverage.
2025 may be the first season that Davante Adams does not put up 1000+ receiving yards since 2019. But don't mistake yards gained as the benchmark for his success. He has already replaced the scoring of three receivers in this offense in just 12 games.
Don't look now, but there are five more games to go. As always, thanks for reading.
