With a record of 5-2, some fans might consider the lack of chemistry between veteran receiver Davante Adams and his quarterback, Matthew Stafford, to be nitpicking. But it is certainly something that jumps out as soon as someone glosses over the Los Angeles Rams' season statistics.
And it's something that is weighing heavily on the mind of both Adams and Stafford as well.
It's something that Adams addressed on the most recent episode of the ManningCast show. The video interview occurred during the Monday Night Football game between the Washington Commanders and the Kansas City Chiefs. When the topic turned to the lack of chemistry so far between the receiver and quarterback, Adams shared:
"You come in expecting to have a certain product, but the reality is, it takes a lot of work and takes a lot of time to get on the same page.
Obviously, he was battling the injury throughout camp, so we didn’t have some of that time to get on the same page. Some of that came throughout the course of the season, and I wouldn’t say we were as efficient as what I would like up until a couple of weeks ago.
But with some of that work and even those game reps, I think we got to a much better place now where we learned each other and we’re a lot more comfortable playing on the field together."- Wide receiver Davante Adams regarding his chemistry with quarterback Matthew Stafford
As much as the absence of Matthew Stafford in training camp was minimized, the reality is that it has impacted the ability of Stafford and Adam to connect this season.
Fans can expect Matthew Stafford to find Davante Adams more often
The pair is working hard to get in synch even as you read this. After all, the veteran wide receiver has yet to push his season's catch rate over 50 percent, a low-bar threshold fans should expect from key offensive contributors. Still, Adams has put up two of his best games against fierce defenses.
He caught four of six against the Indianapolis Colts and five of eight against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Those performances have pushed Adams' catch rate to 52.5 percent over the past four games. Not great, but improving. And that was before the BYE.
While it will take time to get the pair of seasoned veterans to the point of flawless performance in a football game, the two are making strides. And that Week 7 three-touchdown performance was a clear indication that progress is continuing.
Los Angeles is not out of the woods just yet with getting the pair to connect. But the anticipated return of Puka Nacua will be perfectly timed to take off the pressure for instant success in Week 9.
As always, thanks for reading.
