Davante Adams wants to finish out his NFL career with the Los Angeles Rams

Saving the best for last? Let's hope that is the case for Rams new WR Davante Adams

For the Los Angeles Rams, the 2025 NFL season is a bit of a Star Trek adventure. That is, they are going in a direction that they have not gone before. For the first time since accepting the head coast role of the Los Angeles Rams football team, Sean McVay is no longer designing plays to throw to veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp.

He will be targeted by the Seattle Seahawks new quarterback, Sam Darnold.

So where does that leave the Rams offense? Well, in a new chapter with a new target for veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Rams offense has added six-time Pro Bowler and three-time All Pro wide receiver Davante Adams. Adams is about to compete in his 12th NFL season. And per NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, he wants to finish his NFL career with the Rams:

But don't pull up the rocking chair just yet.

In the last eight seasons, Adams has never put up fewer receiving yards than 997. He scored fewer than eight touchdowns just once. Those low points occurred in the same season, 2019, when he only played 12 games.

In 14 games in 2024, he caught 85 of 141 passes for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns. He is deadly off the line of scrimmage, a player who can create separation without motion, formations, or even clearling zones. He is simply one of the most elusive and skilled wide receivers in the NFL, and has been for many years.

Now, he is playing for HC Sean McVay and catching passes from veteran QB Matthew Stafford.

If the Rams offense was looking for explosive weapons, you can toss Davante Adams helmet into the discussion. He has been clocked at 4.51 seconds on his 40-yard dash (versus Cooper Kupp's 4.62-second 40 time). His longest reception in 2025 was 71 yards. And of his 1,063 receiving yards in 2024, 473 yards were the result of yards after the catch (YAC). When targeted last season, quarterbacks enjoyed a rating of 95.4.

In short, there is still plenty of horsepower under the hood.

It's pretty clear that Davante Adams is a dangerous offensive weapon. But playing for Rams HC Sean McVay and in the complex but disciplined Rams offense will be a new chapter in Davante Adams career as well. He has flourished for the Green Bay Packers, a team that runs a version of McVay's offense. But this will be his first season as a receiver in the real McCoy.

Adams has made a career of being a high-volume wide receiver. And that is where I start to struggle to connect the dots. It's not as though the Rams offense cannot throw large number of passes to Adams in 2025. The question is: Will it? After all, from Robert Woods, Desean Jackson, Allen Robinson, Van Jefferson, and even Tutu Atwell, they haven't struggled to produce as much as stay involved in the offense.

For many years, since 2019, the primary target in the Rams passing offense had been Cooper Kupp. He has averaged 124 targets per season over the past six seasons, or nearly 10 targets per game. In his first two seasons, Puka Nacua has averaged 9.5 targets per game.

Will he remain a high-volume receiver? My greatest concern with the addition of Devante Adams in the Rams' offense is the risk of a decreasing number of targets per game. There are only so many passes to go around, and I would expect that Puka Nacus would be the most targeted WR in this offense, as long as he's healthy enough to suit up.

Ultimately, the Rams offense and Davante Adams will both experience new challenges this season. Hopefully, the pairing will recharge the Rams offense into one of the most-dangerous scoring teams in the NFL once more. But it is not by any means a sure-thing.

That, I expect, is why it will be so thrilling when it happens.

As always, thanks for reading.
