After nearly walking away from football after a disappointing 2022 season, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay was supposed to be reinvigorated and refreshed. He had to search his soul and discovered that he had a lot of passion left for the game of football. But in his Day 1 post-draft press conference, none of that showed through.
That has opened the door to many interpreting McVay's muted demeanor as open disappointment in the team's selection of quarterback Ty Simpson.
But NFL insider Peter Schrager rebukes that interpretation, proclaiming LA's head coach is firmly behind Ty Simpson. And his tale of how Los Angeles arrived at the selection is worth watching
The thinking, the secrecy, the and communication behind the Rams' selection of Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick.

Still, this was not the Sean McVay that fans have come to know and enjoy. Most press conferences find general manager Les Snead smiling and laughing alongside a boyish McVay. But there was a serious, somber mood in the room this time.
Perhaps something else had set off McVay?
Sean McVay's frustration may have resulted from losing favored WR
Everyone who follows the LA Rams knows that McVay loves his wide receivers. It is that affinity to that position, and a lack of serious investment into the position, that had many analysts viewing LA's interest in drafting a wide receiver as more than token. While USC wide receiver Makai Lemon was still on the board at 13, both Carnell Tate and Jordyn Tyson were off the board.
And at least one reporter hints that was the true reason why Sean McVay was not himself:
The Simpson phone call and McVay’s pretty muted presser are getting a lot of talk, leading to speculation that Simpson was a “Snead” pick

My belief is that McVay’s anger was more over missing on Tate, think they wanted to trade up but they didn’t expect him at 4, forced a plan…
It wasn't an optical illusion. The question that remains unanswered at this point is why? While we may never know, Jackson Durham may be onto something. If McVay had fixated on either Tate or Tyson, he would have been very frustrated over both coming off the board in the Top 10 selections.
Five wide receivers were selected in Round 1. But many of the wide receivers that appear to fit LA's template are still available. With six picks remaining, it's very likely that LA drafts at least one rookie to fill a seat in the wide receiver room.
Hopefully, that will be enough to restore McVay to his typical jovial self.
As always, thanks for reading.
