Have you counted the number of players on the Los Angeles Rams roster lately? While teams can hold 90 players on the roster through training camp, general manager Les Snead has pushed the pause button on restocking the team far short of that mark.

At last count, LA holds 86 players on the roster and one player on injured reserve. And yes, unsigned quarterback Ty Simpson is counted among the 86.

The Rams have remained somewhat active moving pieces in and out, even after signing a gaggle of undrafted rookies. Offensive lineman Chad Lindberg agreed to an injury settlement before being waived. Edge rusher Eddie Walls III is on IR; LA replaced him by signing Tomon Fox. The team waived defensive end Jalen Logan Redding.

Despite a four-player deficit, the Rams have been content to keep open roster slots. At some point, though, they will need to revisit the roster. And as the pads go on, some players will struggle to sustain the necessary physicality to contend. Training camp will be filled with competition. The bar has been raised, and players will find that good enough no longer is.

Rams roster has room for several additions

Even as the Rams have addressed glaring needs on defense and special teams, their depth remains questionable. In the case of an injury to Matthew Stafford, are they truly prepared to place the entire team on the back of untested backup Stetson Bennett? And is this team content to back up a blue-chip offensive line with an array of inexperienced fringe pieces?

You've read the arguments for LA to add one more player as the perfect encore to a solid offseason. Meanwhile, you may also have seen how ex-Rams are ideal fits for competitors. Both may be true. But Los Angeles does not shoot from the hip. Before Snead tries to find an answer, he lets the questions form.

Where will the Rams see the need to add competition? The Horns invited mounting pressure the moment they charged all-in sacrificing future draft picks for present stars.

Be patient; time will tell. For now, fans can trust the team to pull the trigger at any position that falls short of expectations. Many expect the NFL's top offense to seek out an additional playmaker. But as things stand now, adding offensive-line depth could be a more urgent need.

As always, thanks for reading.
