Don't look now, but this overlooked Rams youngster is itching for a promotion

Even as the Los Angeles Rams frantically scrambled to upgrade both starting cornerback spots, they ignored the position in the draft. The drop-off from Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson to the rest of the room does feel rather significant.

But young Cam Lampkin is prepared to make his move. After two outstanding sessions to open training camp, it's clear that Lampkin is itching for a meaningful role.

While that may come as a mild surprise to non-Rams fans, there's reason to anticipate a surge from Lampkin this season. And so far, he has not disappointed.

Of course, Lampkin is used to the drill. He signed with the team after the 2024 draft and has fought his way through two seasons on the practice squad. In many ways, it's now or never. It's early, but he appears to be making an excellent impression.

Cam Lampkin may be right guy at right time for Rams secondary

While lightly scouted, Lampkin showed promise at both Utah State and Washington State in college before joining the Rams in 2024. Versatility is a strength, as he can slide between the corner and safety positions.

And therein lies the rub. Any undrafted rookie versatile enough to fill multiple roles needs plenty of time to earn a roster spot. Lampkin gets only scraps in terms of training camp reps. And learning multiple roles further dilutes the limited work across several positional competitions.

All that means is that Lampkin may be a late bloomer, requiring more time to master his various responsibilities.

He flashed his potential in the preseason a year ago. But inconsistent play parked him on the practice squad once more. It seems the Rams' patience could be about to pay off.

A strong start to training camp is hardly evidence of the consistency needed to earn Lampkin a roster spot this season. But it's a great first step in the right direction. If he can sustain that level of play, he may be a surprise member of LA's active 2026 roster.
