First-take reactions to Rams' epically lackluster loss to 49ers

The worst of all possible scenarios is now a reality. The Seahawks opened with a stingy victory over the Patriots. The following night, the Los Angeles Rams were humbled at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers. No matter what the Cardinals do, Los Angeles has dug itself into a hole.

And now, it must figure out a way to dig itself out.

How bad was this one? Well, down by 20 and with 3:29 remaining on the clock, the Rams sent backup quarterback Stetson Bennett onto the football field on mop-up duty. And surprisingly, he led them on a 10-play offensive drive that moved the football 45 yards until time ran out.

It was one of the offense's better drives for the entire game.

This was supposed to be the debut of a dominant defense, a high-octane offense, and a refurbished special teams unit. Instead, it was a firecracker that never exploded. LA had science behind its decision to fly to Melbourne the day before the game.

But as fans have come to know far too often, when it comes to San Francisco, you can toss it all out the window.

Lackluster everything was the story in this game

The Rams could not stuff the run. They couldn't sack the quarterback. They couldn't cover 49ers receiver Mike Evans. They allowed big games from his fellow-pass-catchers Demarcus Robinson and Deebo Samuel. Quarterback Brock Purdy looked like a Pro Bowler.

Meanwhile, Myles Garrett did not record a tackle. Matthew Stafford only completed 15-of-25 passes for 155 yards, 0 touchdowns, and one interception. And he was not sacked the entire game, so it wasn't about facing constant pressure.

Tight end Tyler Higbee caught both passes thrown his way, but he also fumbled. That fumble turned into a 49ers field goal.

San Francisco scored three times. Evans, Robinson, and Samuel all caught touchdown passes.

In short, it was another throw-it-all-out-the-window 49ers victory over LA. Now the Rams will have 10 days to review the tape and forget about it before facing the Giants on Monday Night Football.
