Soldiers of Fortune. Mercenary. Pay for play. Motivated by money. Former Los Angeles Rams edge rusher Dante Fowler Jr. benefited from the Aaron Donald effect and used a stint in LA to negotiate a huge contract to play for the Atlanta Falcons. Without Donald consuming the attention of the offensive linemen, he struggled to live up to that lofty paycheck.

Since that time, Fowler has been a hired gun, signing for the highest bidder in the NFL Free Agency market. His latest contract puts him in the trenches opposing his former team. That's right, Fowler just signed a one-year prove-it deal with the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

It may have been Aaron Donald's experience with Fowler that precipitated his famous request of LA's front office general manager, Les Snead, who once shared the tale with Good Morning Football host Peter Schrager:

"I'll partner with anybody. Just make sure they care."

That happened after Fowler's pass rush surged next to Donald, only to flee to a huge sack of dollars at his earliest opportunity. Motivated by money, Fowler's departure left Donald with a sour taste in his mouth. And not surprisingly, Fowler has struggled to reclaim his sacking expertise.

Fowler's past-his-prime production may not help Seahawks much

Dante Fowler Jr. is eying 32 years old by the time he slides into the Seattle Seahawks pass rush. He had an exceptional season in 2024 playing for the Washington Commanders. But he struggled last season for the Dallas Cowboys, with 359 defensive snaps generating 11 tackles and 3.0 quarterback sacks. By 2025's production, that would slide him into sixth place for the Seahawks.

For comparison's sake, that is the same number of quarterback sacks generated by LA Rams rookie Josaiah Stewart. But Stewart doubled his number of tackles, generating 22. And Stewart played a similar number of defensive snaps.

The Seahawks love to load up on former Rams players. Fowler joins wide receiver Cooper Kupp, inside linebackers Ernest Jones and Chris Paul Jr. That's not surprising, as many of the players who used to beat on Seattle while wearing The Horns found their way to the Seahawks roster.

Fowler may be signing with an NFC West Division rival, but his 2025 stats do not give any reason for Rams fans to fear facing him. On the contrary, his presence on the Seahawks roster may likely consume defensive snaps and a roster spot from a younger player who could pose more difficult challenges.

Fowler is still chasing bags first and rings second. As such, he has joined a Rams rival. But his decision should have little impact on LA's date with destiny.

As always, thanks for reading.
