Former Ram radar: Roger McCreary doing his part to help the hapless Lions

While the 1-1 Detroit Lions boast a better record than the 0-1 Los Angeles Rams, they are not exactly in a great position as they turn their attention to Week 3. The Lions defense has surrendered 71 points in two games. That's an average of 35.5 points per game and is an alarming start to the season.

The Lions supplied their defense this offseason with linebacker Troy Reeder and cornerback Roger McCreary, both former Rams. While they signed team-friendly contracts, Reeder didn't make the team and subsequently joined the Jets. McCreary remains, but he is not exactly leading the charge to a dominating defense.

In a trade with the Titans last season, McCreary was brought in bolster LA's sagging secondary. But he was injured almost immediately and failed to make an impact. When his contract ran out at the end of the year, so did his welcome.

Now's he doing his best to help keep the Motor City defense afloat.

Jury still out on whether Roger McCreary could have helped the Rams

The Rams were likely not going to re-sign McCreary even on the one-year $1.4 million contract that he inked with the Lions. It's not certain that, had he re-signed with LA, he would even be on the team. LA is only carrying four cornerbacks on the roster.

Occupying a rotational role in Detroit, McCreary has played 57 defensive snaps across two games. So far he has four tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble, while allowing two receptions on four targets for 13 yards. He is doing his job on a defense that seems unable to perform basic tasks.

Pro Football Focus is not impressed, however, assigning McCreary a grade of 58.7 for the season. In contrast, Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie has a grade of 83.4.

Should the team have brought back McCreary? Who would be bumped off the roster? The Rams got solid performances out of McDuffie and Jaylen Watson in the season opener. McCreary may not have even seen playing time.

McCreary looks like a solid contributor on a very bad defense. He's worth keeping on the radar for Rams fans, if only for curiosity's sake. He won't return to help this secondary. That bridge was burned as soon as general manager Les Snead added McDuffie and Watson.

With Emmanuel Forbes and Joshua Wallace also on the team - and preseason standout Cam Lampkin on the practice squad - the Rams have little need for extra bodies.
