Grant Stuard can be difference-maker Rams need to shore up special teams

While the Los Angeles Rams allowed 27 points in a terrible Week 1 loss, the greater concern is the fact that both starting linebackers suffered injuries during the game. Nate Landman suffered injuries to his shoulder and thumb but is expected to play in Week 2.

His teammate, Omar Speights, reportedly suffered a hip pointer. So far, Speights appears to be trending in a positive direction. If either is unable to suit up in Week 2, Shaun Dolac will be the first to step up into a starting role.

But veteran Grant Stuard is ready to go if needed.

Despite LA's Week 1 injuries, Stuard was limited to a special teams role. He is the next man up after Stuard in a banged-up linebacker unit, and he has a solid reputation as a sure-handed tackler. And even if he continues to be used exclusively in the coverage unit on punts and kickoffs, Stuard could be a surprising key to victory. Here's how.

Rams will need all they can get from special teams in Week 2

If the Rams have any chance of turning things around, they will need to do better in all three phases. The San Francisco 49ers got plenty of production out of punt and kick returns, adding 91 yards to their overall offense. That includes kickoff returns of 29 and 45 yards by Deebo Samuel.

Stuard must lead a better effort in coverage this week against the Giants.

Stout special-teams play will be key to turning the corner on defense. It's not about one player showing up like a superstar. Winning demands that many players chip in a little bit more than before.

If the Horns hope to be better, no one can presume that improvement will come from teammates. Stuard is in ideal position to show the way on special teams.

Of course, if both Landman and Speights are unable to play, Stuard will get some defensive snaps too. But he can make a difference just covering punts and kickoffs.

The Rams don't have the margin of error to allow substandard play from any group. While Grant Stuard may not be the first name fans think of to spearhead a victory, don't let that fool you.

He is exactly the type of depth player this team needs to show up in Week 2.
