In the heat of Day 1 of the 2025 NFL Free Agency market, ESPN's Chicago beat writer Courtney R. Cronin reported that the LA Rams were closing in on adding center Coleman Shelton to the roster. Cronin is a reputable source, and the information made logical sense. After all, the Rams needed to add a backup interior offensive lineman to fill the void left in the Rams depth chart by trading Jonah Jackson to the Chicago Bears. Because Shelton is a versatile veteran who can step into either guard or center position, the report seemed quite credible.

The frantic pace of updates and new deals can be so frantic that it's extremely difficult to wait for confirmation on every personnel move made by the Los Angeles Rams front office.

Per some NFL free agent lists, Coleman Shelton remains available. And an extensive search of NFL free agency tracking sites like Spotrac.com or overthecap.com has yet to confirm that the two sides have agreed on contract terms. That is not to say that they cannot or will not agree. It's simply that whatever talks or negotiations were being held did not reach a full agreement.

Perhaps Shelton was unwilling to come down in his salary expectations. Perhaps the Rams were unwilling to assure Shelton of a starting role for the team in 2025. Whatever the cause, the Rams and Coleman Shelton are not yet aligned. And that is why the deal has yet to be confirmed.

While not yet completed, the Rams interest in in adding Coleman Shelton is a solid step to the Rams depth chart. Even if he is not guaranteed a starting role, Shelton could become the primary backup to the Rams interior offensive linemen. And he is a solid upgrade to the players the Rams currently boast on the roster.

Is it just a matter of time? Or is this roster addition DOA, and there is almost no possibility that it happens. I hope it's the former. The Rams need a versatile veteran like Coleman Shelton. Now that the idea has been put out there, it's tough not to love it.
