His name alone makes this recent Rams signing worth knowing

Who is Bill Murray? No, not the comedian who starred on Saturday Night Live or in the movie Groundhog Day. This Bill Murray is a seven-year offensive lineman. He's someone Los Angeles Rams fans should get to know, if only for the very recognizable name.

General manager Les Snead acted with lightning speed to fill the vacated role of injured guard Justin Dedich. Make way for Murray. But who is he? Does he bring more to the team than a warm camp body?

Well, let's get right to it. Murray is a 6-foot-3, 321-pound interior lineman who has competed with the Colts, Bears, and Patriots. A graduate of William & Mary, Murray has toggled on and off practice squads since 2020. He saw action in one game in 2022 for the Patriots and three games in 2024 for the Bears.

He may not pancake any defender, but there are multiple reasons Murray is in Los Angeles. For starters, he is versatile enough to slide in and compete at multiple positions. And at 29 years of age, he is in peak physical form.

While there is always a chance for upside, Murray arrives to get the Rams through training camp and preseason. And with solid size, vast experience, and the ability to man multiple positions, he is just what the team needs right now.

With a roster that has six players who can compete for playing time at two tackle spots, Murray adds depth to a group whose numbers had shrunk to seven on the interior. And while Murray has yet to start in the NFL, he has seldom not been under contract.

In fact, he was just released by Indianapolis late April. Murray fell victim to the numbers game after the Colts selected offensive lineman Jalen Farmer in Round 4 of this year's draft.

While Murray may not be a plug-and-play contributor like Dedich, it's encouraging that general manager Les Snead felt confident enough in his fit to sign him immediately.

Throughout his career, Murray has shown enough promise to attract interest. Perhaps he breaks through to earn a roster spot in Los Angeles this season. But for now, he is a big, powerful force who can ensure the Rams get the most out of training camp and the preseason.
