Infirmary Room I: Cobie Durant
The first stop on our tour of the Rams infirmary is to review the injuries to starting cornerback Cobie Durant. Durant has been the Rock of Gibraltar for the team's secondary, typically providing the best pass coverage and denying even the most elite receivers he faces from catching passes. The problem is, he suffered a lung contusion against the Buffalo Bills, also known as a Pulmonary Contusion.
The treatment for Pulmonary Contusion is to avoid any more impacts on the chest. Symptoms include coughing, soreness, and shortness of breath. The good news is that it typically takes about a week to heal from Pulmonary Contusions (per the Cleveland Clinic website). The bad news is that the Rams and Cobie Durant do not have a full week before the team faces the 49ers. So the team will be monitoring Durant closely this week.
Plan B
If Cobie Durant cannot go, or the team simply prefers to err on the side of caution, the Rams do have some options to choose from. Veteran defensive back Ahkello Witherspoon has played just six defensive snaps in the past two games. By rights, he will be the first player to see a huge uptick in his workload. And while he was released and signed to the team's practice squad, rookie cornerback Charles Woods could see a small rotational role in the secondary as well.
Still, the most likely and perhaps most anticipated solution is the debut of former Washington Commanders cornerback Emmanuel Forbes, who was claimed off waivers by the team just eight days ago. While Forbes cannot possibly be expected to know the entire defensive playbook just yet, necessity is the mother of invention, and the Rams secondary may simply need Forbes on the football field now.
The Rams have faced the 49ers earlier this season and won. In that game, the secondary relied heavily upon Durant and veteran DB Tre'Davious White, who has since been traded to the Baltimore Ravens. In that game, White was not particularly effective. Perhaps whoever suits up for Week 15 will put on a better performance?
