How well did Rams GM Les Snead/HC Sean McVay do in latest NBC Sports ranking?

Rams fans love the duo of GM Les Snead and HC Sean McVay. But how high do they rank among their NFL peers?

If you ask the Los Angeles Rams and fans that follow the team, there are no problems with the job that GM Les Snead and HC Sean McVay are doing with the team right now. The Rams boast a duo who instinctively know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, and know when to go All In. After all, this is a duo that has steered the Rams' football organization since 2017. That's eight years together, and there is no end in sight.

This is a duo that has led the team to the NFC West Division Title four times, to the Super Bowl two times, and to a Super Bowl victory. This is a team that has never finished lower than third place in the division. And it's a team that has only made one selection on Day 1 of the NFL Draft.

So this team is successful, but had done so in a completely unorthodox way.

NBC Sports' Patrick Daugherty took a swing at ranking the brain trusts of all 32 NFL teams. Where did he rank GM Les Snead and HC Sean McVay? We'll get to that in a moment.

In some cases, only the GM was listed in Daugherty's rankings. At other times, he names both the GM and the head coach. What gives? It appears to be a subjective assessment on Daugherty's part as to who wields the decision-making power for a team's roster. In some cases, he bestows that power entirely upon the general manager. In other cases, he hedges that presumption by including both the general manager and the head coach.

So, let's review the ranking for Rams GM Les Snead and HC Sean McVay. They come in at third place, behind Philadelphia Eagles GM Howie Roseman (#1) and the Kansas City Chiefs duo of GM Brett Veach and HC Andy Reid (#2).

What did he have to say about Snead/McVay?

"Football eras tend to be defined by quarterbacks. That is one of just many ways Sean McVay has been a mold breaker. No one would call this Rams project the “Jared Goff years” or “Matthew Stafford epoch.” But do not be fooled: McVay had a franchise player. Aaron Donald will soon be an inner-circle Hall-of-Famer. Donald anchoring the defense provided McVay with an unusually large margin of team-building error. His retirement left McVay with not only a crater along the defensive line but the need for an entirely new approach to roster-building."
Peter Daugherty

It appears that Daugherty gives McVay too much credit and Sneed too little credit in terms of the Rams roster. Behind-the-scenes draft footage of the Rams' selections during the NFL Draft seems to be a collaboration, but McVay has no problem deferring the final decision to Snead. Similarly, Snead has no hesitation in ensuring McVay's buy-in before a player selection is announced.

However you see the collaboration unfold, it works. This team continues to succeed, and is at the cusp of competing in one more Super Bowl. In the end, that is the ultimate measure of success for an NFL football team.

As always, thanks for reading.
