There is plenty to get excited about over the Los Angeles Rams and the 2025 NFL season. But I'm not going to pull any punches on this one. Seeing Cooper Kupp suited up and ready to compete for the Seattle Seahawks is simply something that I am not prepared to witness. It's not something that I will ever be thrilled to see.
Kupp was THE guy in Super Bowl LVI. After the team's offense was depleted by injuries, the team had to rally behind the catching ability of WRs Cooper Kupp, Van Jefferson, Ben Skowronek, and back up tight end Brycen Hopkins. None are on the Rams roster today. The Rams were only able to churn out 43 yards on the ground in that game.
Cooper Kupp hauled in eight of ten passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns.
It was a game that by rights intended to cement a long-term relationship with veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and the team, a strategy to reward him for agreeing to take a chance on himself and sign such an incentive-laden contract that more than tripled his pay if the Rams won Super Bowl LVI. The team did win, but lost OBJ before the half to a nasty ACL injury. OBJ had hauled in two of three passes for 52 yards and a touchdown.
Will Kupp haunt the Rams in 2025?
When the Rams chose to release veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp, they had to understand that he would be lured to consider returning home to where it all began. He played for Eastern Washington University, a surprisingly competitive football program from a school located in Cheney, Washington. The closest NFL team to that site is Seattle, Washington.
And the Seahawks did not hesitate to sign Kupp to a multi-year deal.
The competing emotions that spring from that nefarious union is tearing Rams fans apart. Nobody wants anything but the best for the team's former hero. But it's impossible to separate the player from his new team. Kupp plays for the Seahawks, the same Seahawks that finished with a 10-7 record in 2024. The same Seahawks that got younger at quarterback.
The same Seahawks whose fanbase has every reason to cheer for their newest free agent acquisition.
Kupp knows the Rams, and the Rams know Kupp. But the Rams do not know how the Seahawks plan to use him in their offense. If there was ever a time that justified revamping the Rams offense, now is that time. After all, Cooper Kupp knows the Rams offense as well as HC Sean McVay and QB Matthew Stafford.
The Seahawks play 17 games in 2025, and only two of those games are against the Los Angeles Rams. For now, Kupp's intimate knowledge of the Rams offense gives them a distinct advantage. Perhaps that is what is driving this team to undertake sweeping changes on offense.
For now, Cooper Kupp plays for the Seattle Seahawks. That make him an opponent of the Rams. How will it all turn out? For the best, hopefully. But I won't be cheering against Cooper Kupp.
The MVP of Super Bowl LVI deseves that much.
As always, thanks for reading.
