The Los Angeles Rams have tried, and failed, to trade up and select the future tight end of the team for the past three seasons. While that may seem like a minor matter after the team ultimately chose to trade back in the 2025 NFL Draft and select tight end Terrance Ferguson, the strategy has met with new complications.
It seems that this is the year for rookies selected in Round 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft have chosen to fight for guaranteed monies, and that has created a bit of a domino effect as young players have refused to sign until enough of their rookie salary for the next four years is guaranteed. With the Rams training camp about to begin in a matter of days, the potential absence of rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson has created a bit of a crisis that nobody saw coming.
But now that the problem is obvious, the solution may be on its way too.
The Rams selected Ferguson with the 46th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and so far, that portion of the draft has been one of the most difficult to pin down in terms of how much guaranteed money is the right amount. Well, the San Francisco 49ers were finally able to scale the wall with their Round 2 rookie, Texas defensive tackle Alfred Collins, and reach an agreement. The rumored contract agreement was reported by NFL Insider Adam Schefter:
The next big domino in the second round has fallen: 49ers’ second-round pick Alfred Collins, the No. 43rd overall selection, reached agreement tonight on a four-year, $10.3 million deal that includes over $9 million guaranteed and now is expected to trigger multiple second-round… pic.twitter.com/iiIWgOCh7p

What this now means is that the Rams have a viable template to use in their contract negotiations with Ferguson.
Get this guy on the football field
Some Rams fans have not been alarmed, even if Terrance Ferguson fails to report to training camp. But I'm not convinced that there is a full appreciation of what Ferguson can deliver for the Rams offense, even as early as his rookie season. So, let's share some of his potential and why the Rams were wise to choose him.
Let's start out with Fantasy Football projections, which are specialized to speculate on receiving yards and touchdowns. In the latest FF models, Ferguson is projected to be one of the top three rookie tight ends over the next three seasons. Who are the other two? Michigan TE Colston Loveland and Penn State TE Tyler Warren.

Updated model, which now includes EPA Success Rate as an input
Colston Loveland remains TE1
Tier 2 now includes Terrance Ferguson, Elijah Arroyo, and Harold Fannin Jr

Even knowing that the Rams are quite reluctant to turn over large roles to the offense to any rookie, Terrance Ferguson could prove to be the exception to the rule. He is bursting with athleticism, and his production on a football field is only beginning to reflect his full potential:

The Rams simply need to get him in training camp and get his blocking refined to a point that he can be entrusted to step onto the football field. But that won't happen unless the Rams get him signed, sealed, and delivered.
The ranks of Round 2 rookies are beginning to break, with multiple Round 2 rookie signings happening. Hopefully, the Rams will get Terrance Ferguson signed before training camp. Ferguson cannot afford to sit out a single day of training camp if he is to have any chance of contributing this season. And the Rams offense needs Ferguson contributing, perhaps more than fans know.
As always, thanks for reading.
