The Los Angeles Rams are not a team to measure the chances of an NFL player by his height. After all, the team signed free agent nose tackle Poona Ford to the defense. As one of the most effective run stuffers in the NFL, Ford was the logical choice. But at 5-foot-11. he does not one to look the part from afar. And yet, he delivers.
Are the Rams onto something here?
Perhaps. After all, this is a team that is more than happy to break the molds right now. And yes, I am here for all of it. But expanding that talent search is more than just a matter of finding players who do not fit the typical physical profile. They have to play well, too. NT Poona For plays well. Now let's pivot to another undersized NFL rookie prospect, undrafted IOL Willie Lampkin.
Standing 5-foot-10 and weighing 270 pounds, you might not see former North Carolina Tarheel Willie Lampkin as having a legitimate shot in the NFL. But when you measure his production, he plays far larger than his height. He is a passionate expert at blocking. Just check out his Senior Bowl week practices:
He stands toe to toe with some of the nation's best interior defensive linemen, in a rookie class loaded with talent at the position. And the Rams are always on the lookout for promising offensive linemen who fall out of the draft. Just ask starting left tackle Alaric Jackson if you don't believe me.
Lampkin at 6-foot-3 or taller would have been a Round 1 selection. But at 5-foot-10, few NFL teams even considered him for a roster addition. That's disappointing, because Lampkin had one of the more impressive draft profile write-ups I've read in some time. NFL Draft analyst Lance Zierlein writes: "Lampkin has the best tape I’ve studied of any prospect in the 2025 draft." NFL Draft Buzz writes: "Uncanny natural leverage allows him to consistently win the battle at the point of attack despite severe size disadvantages against much larger defenders." He was viewed as a Day 3 draft selection.
The Rams signed him to the roster after the draft.
College Football Network author Terrance Biggs believes that Lampkins' best chance to see the football field lies in switching over to fullback. While that has been something that we (and many fans) have lobbied for over the years, this could be the right time for the offense to get more physical and punishing on the ground.
While Lampkin surrendered no sacks in college, his size disadvantage will prove to be an even greater challenge in the NFL. However, if he crosstrains to fullback, even on a limited number of offensive plays, his size pivots from disadvantage to advantage. And letting him lead the blocking into the hole will amplify the success of every other running back on the roster.
It's unlikely that the Rams suddenly get the inspiration to reintroduce a fullback into their offensive arsenal. After all, IOL Willie Lampkins is worth the effort to see if he can prove to be an NFL offensive lineman. Plenty of NFL draft analysts are confident that he can.
But Lampkin offers an opportunity for more. And that is what the offseason is all about anyway. Optimism, speculation, and imagination. Despite being undrafted, IOL Willie Lampkin gives the Rams fans the Trifecta. Now it's just a matter of waiting to see how the team plans to use him.
As always, thanks for reading.
