Jared Goff reality Lions are facing is nothing new to Rams fans

In 2021, the Los Angeles Rams traded former first overall pick Jared Goff to Detroit in exchange for Matthew Stafford. Not even a year later, the Rams won Super Bowl 56 with Stafford leading the way while Goff and the Lions experienced success but haven't reached the top of the mountain.

The Rams' decision to move on from Goff came after a disappointing loss in Super Bowl 53 where L.A. scored just three points and two lackluster seasons in 2019 and 2020. Acquiring Stafford was clearly the right move as the Rams won their first Super Bowl in over two decades.

Meanwhile, Goff has managed to help take the Lions to new heights but it's been a case of "close, but no cigar" during his time in Detroit. Brad Berreman of SideLion Report wrote about how Lions fans won't want to hear it but it might be time to start having the uncomfortable conversation about Goff and how far the Lions can get with him as their quarterback.

Berreman shared quotes from Mike Florio and Chris Simms of Pro Football Talk, who discussed Goff's future with the Lions. Berreman also pointed out that those doubting Goff and if he can win it all might very well be onto something.

"... Los Angeles Rams' head coach Sean McVay recognized he could not win a Super Bowl with Goff and pivoted away as soon as it made sense," Berreman wrote. "It's easy, and convenient, to believe Goff can lead the Lions to a Super Bowl/a Super Bowl win. But it's reasonable to wonder if, and question if, he truly can. Those latter thoughts could be looming on an uncomfortable horizon some Lions' fans would rather ignore."

Lions are stuck with a Jared Goff truth Rams already knew

Rams fans aren't surprised in the slightest to hear this. Goff wasn't terrible during his time as Los Angeles' quarterback but it was clear that he wasn't the right guy to help lead Sean McVay's offense. The Rams were never going to be where they wanted to be if they had stuck with Goff.

The good news is that the trade has worked out well for both sides. Stafford got to play for a contender and showed what he can do when on a contending team while Goff got to go somewhere he was appreciated. Goff has mostly played well for the Lions but even having the top seed in the NFC in the 2024 playoffs wasn't enough to get Detroit to its first Super Bowl.

With Goff entering his age-32 season, the talks are going to slowly but surely start to turn toward if he's the right guy for the Lions. Berreman mentioned the Chiefs and how they eventually saw what their ceiling was with Alex Smith and then went on to draft Patrick Mahomes, and well -- Look how that panned out for everyone in Kansas City.

Perhaps the Lions take a similar approach down the road. If they do, Rams fans won't be the least bit surprised to see it come to that.
