Jared Verse's post-Rams era is off to a disappointing start with Browns

When the Los Angeles Rams traded promising edge rusher Jared Verse, some fans felt the cost to add Myles Garrett was too much. While draft picks are simply currency to general manager Les Snead, Verse was a different matter altogether. He was a rising star on the refurbished defense. He was an outspoken lightning rod on a team that loves to let game performances do their talking.

But Cleveland Browns fans may have their own regrets. Verse has been disappointing. After two games, he had just two pressures. After three games, he has yet to record a sack. His eight tackles put him below his 2025 pace.

That's not going to cut it for a fanbase that waved farewell to a pass-rushing maniac in Garrett.

Garrett's injury could sideline him well into October. Even so, Verse is giving Browns fans buyer's remorse. The front office had hoped to avoid that. Trading away a future Hall of Famer is bad enough. When the young star included the in the trade return fails to deliver, the optics are bad, too.

Jared Verse is struggling in new Browns defense

Browns defensive tackle Mason Graham has already recorded four sacks. Defensive end Isaiah McGuire has one. The defense as a whole has seven in three games. Verse has yet to bring down an opposing quarterback. He's not even among the Browns' best tacklers.

Fans have a right to expect edge defenders to pile up sacks. They have the benefit of playing against one offensive tackle, with an occasional double team against a tight end and/or a chip block by a running back. And Verse is playing in his third season, so he should be well-versed (pun intended) in defeating blocking schemes.

Verse is outspoken. That's endearing when he plays well, but when his actions don't back up his words, that quality amplifies fans' disappointment. Verse cannot change who he is. He loves to rattle cages. But that brazen attitude can have the opposite effect.

In Cleveland, the rule is put up or shut up. Verse isn't about to shut up anytime soon. Especially if Garrett can't get healthy soon, the trade could be a disappointing outcome for everyone.
