Jesting Joe Burrow-to-Rams prediction resurfaces (but don’t buy it just yet)

The Los Angeles Rams are fortunate to have gotten five (soon-to-be six) seasons from quarterback Matthew Stafford. The trade that landed him in the City of Angels immediately produced a Super Bowl and has brought a boatload of success to the Rams organization.

That being said, all good things come to an end, and with Stafford entering his age-38 season, it's safe to say he's approaching the denouement of his decorated career. The Rams think they have the right replacement waiting in the wings in Ty Simpson, the 13th pick in this year's draft, but what if an even better option emerged down the road?

In Defector's annual "Why Your Team Sucks" series, columnist Drew Magary dropped the following nugget in the Cincinnati Bengals' edition (every team gets a turn eventually):

"Your quarterback: Joe Burrow, who absolutely can't wait to be an L.A. Ram two years from now. Let's see how our hero is celebrating his impending move!"

Magary then referenced a Burrow interview with Vanity Fair during the Met Gala where he discussed spending time in Los Angeles.

"Burrow said he's been in Los Angeles a fair amount, and, 'doing a lot of Legos.' (He has a wide array of hobbies.) 'I was excited about what the new Pokémon collab [Legos] did,' he added, but 'I haven't dove into those yet. I have them sitting at home for when things start to calm down a little bit.'"

Now, look, this is obviously satire. We all know it is. But, on the other hand, the Vanity Fair piece isn't. Burrow really did say he had been spending "a fair amount" of time in Los Angeles and if that's the case, maybe there is an argument that he'd want to join the Rams later on. It's a purely speculative, mostly unserious notion that has been floating around for a while now.

Out of the two Los Angeles teams, the Rams are the one who could need a quarterback in the future, as Justin Herbert is doing his thing with the Chargers. That all depends on how long Stafford plays and whether Simpson pans out. It's worth nothing that Burrow is under contract through2029, so, if Magary's two years-from-now prediction became reality, it would have to involve a trade.

By that time, the Rams would surely know if Simpson is capable of being the guy or not. If he's not, then, hey, trading for Burrow would be awesome! But let's not kid ourselves here. The chance that Burrow ends up in Horns feels slim to none.

It's fun to dream big though, isn't it? Burrow arriving in L.A. a few years after Stafford retires would give the Rams another franchise quarterback joining his second team and hoping to accomplish what he couldn’t with his first. Happy to help you out there, Joe.
