In 2021, the LA Rams were linked to several veteran quarterbacks who were rumored to be available 'for a price.' At the time of those rumors, the price for a veteran NFL quarterback was highly subjective and speculative. Ultimately, the Rams settled on trading the Detroit Lions for veteran QB Matthew Stafford. To acquire him, the Rams had to send starting QB Jared Goff, a 2021 Round 3 pick, a 2022 Round 1 pick, and a 2023 Round 1 pick.
But amidst the heart of NFL Rumors, then Green Bay Packers veteran QB Aaron Rodgers was also linked to the LA Rams. At the time, there were plenty of NFL analysts who foresaw an easier path for Rodgers to the Rams roster. Ultimately, history proves that Rams HC Sean McVay had his heart set on Stafford. And Rams GM Les Snead has a simple rule. What HC Sean McVay wants, McVay gets.
Ultimately, the Green Bay Packers did agree to trade veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. The price? It was surprisingly far less than the Rams had to pay for Stafford. The trade involved the Packers sending to the New York Jets:
- QB Aaron Rodgers
- 2023 Round 1 pick (15th overall)
- 2023 Round 5 pick (170th overall)
In return, the Jets agreed to send to the Packers:
- 2023 Round 1 pick (13th overall)
- 2023 Round 2 pick (42nd overall)
- 2023 Round 6 pick (207th overall)
- Conditional 2024 Round 2 pick (conditions not met to upgrade to Round 1 pick)
On the surface, it would appear that the Jets paid far less for Aaron Rodgers than the Rams paid for Matthew Stafford. But let's pause that line of thought and compare the two QBs production in the since the 2021 NFL season:
- Matthew Stafford | 29-22 | 4-0 Playoffs | 1168 of 1774 | 13,495 yards | 88 TDs | 43 INTs
- Aaron Rodgers | 25-20 | 0-1 Playoffs | 957 of 1454 | 10,252 yards | 80 TDs | 23 INTs
Keep in mind that Rodgers continued to play for the Packers through the 2022 NFL season. And since arriving to the New York Jets, he has not exactly hit the ground running.
Jets suffering from Buyer's remorse
The New York Jets appeared to be an ideal landing spot for Aaron Rodgers. They boasted a stingy defense, a respectable rushing offense, and merely needed a star veteran QB to put them over the top. But Rodgers suffered an Achilles Tendon injury in Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season. And the same Jets team has struggled to find success in 2024, now with a record of 3-8.
As a result, the Jets have fired both HC Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas in 2024 already. Now, the ire of frustrated fans and ownership is focusing on QB Aaron Rodgers. As a result, more and more NFL rumors report that Aaron Rodgers's time with the Jets football team is coming to an end.
And that means pure chaos for the Jets in less than two years after trading for him.
More and more reports are surfacing over the eroding relationship between the New York Jets football team and veteran QB Aaron Rodgers. While the story may simply be due to the lull of mid-season NFL analysts with overactive imaginations, it's tough to ignore the adage: 'Where there's smoke, there's fire.'
In retrospect, the LA Rams were linked to Aaron Rodgers, but opted to pursue Lions QB Matthew Stafford. Despite paying more in 2021 than the Jets paid in 2023, there is no question that the Rams front office made the better deal. Rodgers has had absolutely no success for the Jets, and his inability to stay healthy and win games has cost their head coach and their general manager their jobs.
The Rams have won a Super Bowl after trading for Matthew Stafford. The Jets have unquestionably regressed since adding Rodgers, and find themselves facing a major rebuild. In the end, only the Rams successfully clipped and grafted a veteran quarterback into their offense.
Neither the Denver Broncos (QB Russell Wilson) nor the New York Jets (QB Aaron Rodgers) were able to duplicate the Rams' success. And it's those little things that make this Rams football team so successful
