Jets are about to learn brutal Troy Reeder lesson Rams fans already know

Former Los Angeles Rams linebacker Troy Reeder didn't put the best film on tape during six seasons with a curled horn on the side of his helmet, but that hasn't stopped the New York Jets from becoming the latest team to roll the dice on him.

The Jets have signed Reeder to their practice squad, per local reporter Connor Hughes. With minimal depth behind starters Demario Davis and Jamien Sherwood, there is a very good chance that Reeder eventually makes his way onto the active roster and cements himself in a role as the team's No. 3 inside linebacker.

Reeder, who was only on the open market after he failed to crack the Detroit Lions' 53-man unit, is about to show Jets fans why he has garnered such an infamous reputation among Rams fans despite his humble beginnings. If head coach Aaron Glenn expects Reeder to move the needle even a tad, things could get hairy.

Reeder originally joined the Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Delaware in 2019. Reeder has carved out a seven-year NFL career entirely in the Los Angeles area, as he was a Ram for six seasons and a Los Angeles Charger for one brief stint in 2022. Reeder is fine depth, but he has really struggled at times when pressed into more extensive service.

Reeder's 45.7 and 57.9 PFF grades over the 2023 and 2024 seasons are not exemplary, and they were let down by some particularly bad performances in coverage. Even defensive coaches like Raheem Morris and Chris Shula, who have successfully coached up late-round picks and undrafted players, struggled with Reeder.

Reeder may play early with the Jets

Davis is one of the best at what he does, but he is 37 years old. Sherwood is coming off his worst season right after signing a huge contract. Reeder, who will be joined on the practice squad by former Carolina Panthers third-round pick Trevin Wallace, could be thrust into action sooner rather than later.

A depth role may serve Reeder well, as he can stop the run and make plays on special teams. If forced into a larger capacity, however, he could show Jets faithful exactly why fans of a Rams defense that was still very successful in spite of him still speaks his name with venom, a product of his overexposure due to a lagging linebacker corps on otherwise quality teams.
