Keagen Trost gives Rams immediate insurance in Week 6 (and hope for the future)

The Los Angeles Rams' offensive line is about to face upheaval. Even as the unit has helped quarterback Matthew Stafford to lead the NFL in passing yards while allowing only seven sacks, the group is playing on borrowed time. You see, four of five starters are playing in the last year of their current contracts.

Against the wave of outbound veterans stands rookie offensive lineman Keagen Trost. He was drafted on Day 2 of the 2026 draft, in the third round, which is itself noteworthy. But he can sub in and compete at virtually any position along the offensive line. He just returned to the active Rams roster from injured reserve.

The timing coincides with left tackle Alaric Jackson's one-game suspension.

Trost could be thrust into the spotlight. With Jackson out, veteran David Quessenberry will start in his place. Trost by default becomes the swing tackle facing a next-man -up scenario if either right tackle Warren McClendon or Quessenberry is injured.

Let that sink in. Just hours after coming off IR, Trost could be sent into action.

Rams will likely reform the offensive line next season

General manager Les Snead, miracle worker that he is, is unlikely to find sufficient funds to extend four starters on expiring contracts.

To be fair, the team may have timed the mass exodus of veterans deliberately. Both center Coleman Shelton and right guard Kevin Dotson are on the wrong side of 30. Both left guard Steve Avila and McClendon are young enough to warrant an extension.

The only offensive lineman not facing free agency at year's end is Jackson. His Week 6 suspension will tax the Rams' limited depth as they face the Arizona Cardinals (1-4) hoping to reclaim a .500 record.

Trost's return helps offset Jackson's unavailability. Trost entered the season on IR after suffering a preseason hamstring injury, requiring him to miss a minimum of four games. Now he is back, just in time.

Keagen Trost's return is a dose of optimism

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Trost is not the answer for Week 6, as he has been away from practice for over a month. Quesseberry is the best choice as Jackson's fill-in. At most, Trost will remain an emergency backup for the game.

But Trost does bring optimism to a team reeling from injuries, losses, and critical questions. It all comes after the Rams were decreed Super Bowl favorites long before a football was snapped.

It may happen, but this team has to turn the corner sooner rather than later.

The Horns have struggled to find the success so many expected, but the future is also shrouded in uncertainty. And without significant contributions from rookies in either 2025 or 2026, they will be forced to guess who can step up.

Trost can be the exception to that rule. He merely must be ready to suit up and perform when he gets his shot. Someday, he could be the franchise left tackle for quarterback Ty Simpson.

As always, thanks for reading.
