The LA Rams seemed to prepare the offense for a running back by committee for the 2024 NFL season. However, those plans were derailed by the time the season arrived. Whether the team never grew confident enough in rookie running back Blake Corum to direct significant carries his way, or the team was too blown away by the passion and production of veteran RB Kyren Williams, I cannot say.
What I can say is that by the time the team limped into a Week 6 BYE, Kyren Williams had 95 carries or 360 rushing yards and six touchdowns, while rookie Blake Corum had 13 carries for 53 yards and 0 touchdowns.
And that rate of distribution has carried the Rams to a record of 8-6.
But with three games left, and Kyren Williams boasting 280 carries for 1,121 yards and 12 touchdowns, what might he accomplish this season? He has three games left in the season, he is a mere 24 rushing yards shy of setting his career record high at the feat.
But are there higher altitudes for the Rams young rusher to aspire to achieve this season? If he remans on track with his current average production, he could rapidly ascend in the record books.
The Los Angeles Rams Single-Season Rushing Leaders
There are no shortages of Rams legendary rushers in the team's record books. From Eric Dickerson to Steve Jackson, Todd Gurley, Jerome Bettis, Marshall Faulk, Lawrence McCutcheon, Greg Bell, and many others. If you'd like to learn more, we have the Top 15 LA Rams' greatest RBs that I recommend checking out.
You see, the thing is, Kyren Williams is knocking on the door at joining that prestigious group. In the minds of some fans, he is rightfully already among them. You see, he is currently the 22nd-ranked running back in terms of rushing yards in a single season. Thanks to his stellar performance in just 12 games in 2023, Kyren Williams also holds 19th place on that list as well. Which list am I referring to?
The Los Angeles Rams Single-Season Rushing Leaders list, of course. Just a quick review is all that you need to be reminded of the great running backs who have worn horns throughout the history of the franchise. More importantly, Rams fans may enjoy renewed appreciation of the season from Kyren Williams in 2024 as well.
For example, did you know that he has averaged 100 rushing yards per game over the past three games?
Currently in 22nd place on the list this season, if he musters an average of 50 rushing yards per game over the past three games, he will vault into 12th place on the single season record list. If he manages to extend his average of 80 yards per game over the pass three games in 2024, he will land in 10th place on the list.
If he could somehow find a way to average 103+ rushing yards over the final three games, he will usurp Jerome Bettis and take over fifth place on the Rams Single Season Rushing Leaders list. That is something that not even Todd Gurley was capable of doing in his career.
No, Williams is not presumed to end up at such a lofty place this season. He has three very stingy defenses to face, two of which have resulted in just 93 rushing yards in two games. So no, this is not an easy task. But the Rams have been relying more and more on rushing the football to set up play action passes, and the team has been quite effective at running the football of late.
It could be the difference of competing in the postseason, and not.
As always, thanks for reading.
