The LA Rams had to scramble in Week 9 after starting punter Ethans Evans fell ill. The team signed two punters to the practice squad, The team signed P Ryan Sanborn, and followed by signing P Ty Zentner the next day. The very next day, the team elevated Zentner to the active roster to face the Seattle Seahawks.
Despite being a temp punter who was just signed to the team, the Rams called on Ty Zentner to punt seven times in the stellar overtime victory against the Seattle Seahawks. Zentner performed relatively well, punting seven times for a gross punting average of 40.1 yards per punt, and a net punting average of 35.1 yards per punt. Unfortunately, one of Zentner's punts was blocked.
Thankfully, the LA Rams are welcoming back starting punter Ethan Evans. LA Rams HC Sean McVay reported Ethan Evans has been medically cleared and will suit up for Week 10. With his recent stellar punting performances, that is excellent news.
Evans was the only special teams player drafted in the 2023 NFL Draft. But he is a special type of player. Not only is he one of the most rapidly developing punters in the NFL, but he also handles the kickoff duties as well. That allows the team to focus the placekicker on field goal duties exclusively.
The Wingate rookie prospect was personally scouted by LA Rams ST Coordinator Chase Blackburn, and thankfully he was added via the draft. He has always possessed a booming punt in terms of gross distance. But in 2024, he has added pinpoint precision with coffin kicks to his arsenal. And he continues to add hang time to his punts, allowing coverage teams to catch up to his booming punts.
The LA Rams are not 'there' yet in terms of winning consistently, but the team continues to make strides each week. Evans return helps the special teams units tremendously for Week 10.
As always, thanks for reading.
