When it comes to the Los Angeles Rams, there are never concerns about inclement weather disrupting mini-camp, OTAs, or even training camp. But there is such a thing as too much fair weather. In one of the earlier chapters of my life, I lived in Athens, Greece, for three years. And I can tell you that the sunny sky reputation of the southern Mediterranean Sea is well-earned. But after a while, you miss the unpredictable nature of changing weather.
In a bold proclamation early in May, Rams President Kevin Demoff held a joint press conference with Hawaii Governor Josh Green to announce the team's plans to locate their 2025 mini-camp in Maui, Hawaii. While the announcement is a one-off event, the team and state adminstration both voiced hopes that this will be a growing partnership in the future:

So what does Rams HC Sean McVay think about this? While he is supportive of the idea, he is under no false expectations. Mini-camp located on Maui is a major distraction that this team will need to overcome if progress is the goal this offseason. After all, despite the sprinkling of veterans to lead the team and ensure focus, the Rams roster is bursting with young players.
They will not easily ignore their exotic surroundings to focus on football practice at the height of fair-weather summer.
So, when are the Rams' future dates on the schedule? The NFL announced the Rams' schedule for the offseason workouts in early April. Remaining dates are:
First Day: April 21 (done)
Rookie Minicamp: May 9-11 (done)
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 27-28, May 30, June 2-3, June 5, June 9-10, June 12
Mandatory Minicamp: June 16-18
As per the official announcement, the league has strict guidelines for those early workout sessions, such as:
"Phase 1 refers to the first two weeks of the program, with activities limited to meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation only.
Phase 2 refers to the next three weeks of the program. On-field workouts may include individual or group instruction and drills, as well as "perfect play drills," and drills and plays with offensive players lining up across from offensive players and defensive players lining up across from defensive players, conducted at a walk-through pace. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted.
Phase 3 refers to the next four weeks of the program. Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or "OTAs". No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted."
The Rams are in far better shape this offseason than in recent memory. The team has returned all three coordinators, has essentially a majority of starters and rotational players returning, and the team and players have shown steady development as they grew together in 2024.
Of course, there are positional battles to determine through training camp competition. But except for several positions, the Rams' depth chart will be a relatively simple matter to pencil in starters.
Still, the Rams are not about taking in the sights or catching some rays at the beach. Grinding it out at prescribed opportunities is only as rewarding as the discipline of the players involved. Right now, the team has opted to create more distractions in the offseason schedule. Let's hope it all pans out.
As always, thanks for reading.
