Latest Aaron Rodgers controversy proves Rams dodged a bullet in offseason

Unsigned, and now seemingly bitter, Aaron Rodgers may not sign with an NFL team after all.

When the alignment of the Los Angeles Rams and veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford was a bit off-balance and wobbly, one of the alternatives to bringing Stafford back on a revised contract was to reach out to former New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers fit the bill as a bridge veteran quarterback who would play for a reasonable sum, who was still effective in the pocket, and whose tenure in the NFL was fading like a sunset.

Thankfully, the Rams smoothed things over with Matthew Stafford. The Plan B option of Aaron Rodgers as the starting quarterback is appearing less and less positive as time passes. In the NFL, water under the bridge is best left in the past. But Rodgers was having none of it. On a recent episode of the Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers blasted New York Jets executives:

Considering that he is still unsigned, that is a bold, and foolish strategy. Rodgers may have felt disrespected at the time, but raising the issue months after the fact does nothing to elevate his marketability. Like any hiring process, new employers shy away from candidates who have harsh commentaries about their former employers. And that applies to the NFL as well.

Until now, the presumption of Rodgers' next team had whittled down to the Pittsburgh Steelers. But NFL rumors indicate that Rodgers has had an offer from the Steelers for weeks, and simply not accepted it yet. Now, with these latest comments, many NFL Insiders and analysts no longer view Rodgers to the Steelers as likely. With the 2025 NFL Draft filling the screen, that has now begun to infiltrate how analysts view likely draft scenarios:

If quarterback-needy teams are passing on Rodgers now, Rams fans can be euphoric that the team did not tap Aaron Rodgers to hold down the fort for a year or two as the offense transitioned from Stafford to an unknown rookie quarterback successor.

All's well that ends well? Perhaps, perhaps not. As 32 NFL teams prepare for what could be a fortune-filled three-day draft event, the future of veteran QB Aaron Rodgers appears to be more about retirement than resurgence. The Rams were once in the mix to salvage Rodgers career after his chapter with the New York Jets. Now, it appears tha Rodgers story in the NFL may be coming to an end.

As always, thanks for reading.
