For all NFL teams that are not advancing to the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs, fans must occupy their time by affiliating with teams that remain in the hunt or turning their attention to the upcoming NFL draft.
But for fans trying to find hope after a dismal finish to the NFL season, they have clung to an expectation that Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur would be let go after failing to advance in the postseason.
Again.
Unfortunately, NFL Insider Adam Schefter just extinguished that flickering hope by reporting that the Packers are expected to exert efforts to retain Lafleur with the team. Unfortunately for Los Angeles fans, NFL teams that are frustrated by not having a chance to sign Matt LaFleur as their head coach still have a chance to sign his brother, Mike LaFleur, as their next head coach.
LaFleur is the offensive coordinator for LA, and his stock has never been higher. He gave a masterclass of running the offense in Week 14, and his play-calling led to the most points scored by the team all season long. So if teams are shut out of getting Matt LaFleur, they can simply interview his kid brother.
Losing Mike LaFleur could be disastrous for Rams in 2026
Even as head coach Sean McVay's coaching tree has yielded many branches to the NFL in the form of new head coaches, not every offensive coach is compatible with McVay's offense. Consider former offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who is now head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. He only lasted one season with LA.
The same was true for offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur, who only lasted one season in 2017. After he left the team, McVay handled the offensive coordinator duties for two seasons before hiring Kevin O'Connell in 2020.
Mike LaFleur has been the longest tenured offensive coordinator under McVay. He has spanned from 2023 through 2025. But his impact has only truly been felt this season, as he has had a knack for specializing in tight-end and running back plays. After adopting those strategies this season, the LA Rams offense has been tops in the NFL once more.
McVay loves innovation and thinking outside the box on his coaching staff. But he is hesitant to implement wholesale changes until he sees irrefutable proof that it works. He was unwilling to change his offensive schemes until Liam Coen's offensive strategy transformed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense in 2024.
McVay knows offense. But it's that intricate knowledge that makes finding the right fit at offensive coordinator such a tough task. Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur doesn't get enough credit. But if he's gone, every fan will notice his absence. That's a nightmare scenario that fans want no part of.
As always, thanks for reading.
