The Los Angeles Rams know that they must be prepared for the next chapter of the offense, one that no longer includes veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. But while we have anticipated the team's drafting a rookie quarterback, there is a growing sense of appreciation at the Rams quarterback strategy so far. After all, the Rams have not panicked. The front office has not failed to address the quarterback room. And unlike many teams, the Rams have sidestepped practically all locker room toxicity by staying the course with:
- Starting quarterback - Matthew Stafford
- Backup quarterback - Jimmy Garoppolo
- Reserve/developmental quarterback - Stetson Bennett
- Camp arm quarterback - Dresser Winn
It this a perfect depth chart? Nothing is perfect. If Rams quarterbacks start getting injured, the team will be forced to tap whoever remains in the NFL free agent market at the position. And the team is more likely than not to emphasize familiarity with the team over upside potential. But that can be said of all 32 NFL teams.
The Rams did not create locker room controversy by drafting an early quarterback and handing him the keys while a solid veteran starter is on the roster, making millions. Somehow, the Atlanta Falcons believe that strategy to be optimal for their 2025 NFL season by starting Michael Penix and benching veteran Kirk Cousins.
We will have to wait to see how that works out.
Then there is the Tennessee Titans fiasco, having drafted Kentucky QB Will Levis in Round 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft, but turning right around and drafting Miami QB Cam Ward with the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Levis has opted to get season-ending surgery to fix right shoulder problems, against the wishes of his team. In two seasons, Levis has played in 21 games, won five and lost 16, completed 61.0 percent of his passes for 3,899 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions.
Despite getting some snaps with the team's starting offense, Levis sees the writing on the wall and understands that he will back up his teammate for the next two NFL seasons.
Titans QB Will Levis will be undergoing season-ending surgery on the right shoulder injury he sustained early last year before further aggravating it later in the season. Levis has been unable to shake the discomfort and his shoulder still is bothering him.

That decision is the right move for Will Levis, but it seems to throw the Titans depth chart at quarterback right off the rails.
Do the #Titans want a legit QB to compete with Brandon Allen, or do they just want a 4th arm for camp?
— Justin M (@JustinM_NFL) July 21, 2025
That's the question. Not many legit backups out there. Carson Wentz & Ryan Tannehill (hah, imagine) easily the best options. https://t.co/ntcev1Y3UT
Keep in mind that the Rams faced quarterback decisions in the offseason. The team managed to lure Stafford back for another season, while allowing both parties to revisit the arrangement at the end of the season. Still, if something happens unexpectedly, the team is somewhat insulated by having the option to promote Garoppolo to starter, allow Bennett to compete for a backup role, and add a new face to the quarterback room for the 2025 NFL season.
Unlike other teams trying to sort out their quarterback depth chart, the Rams enter training camp with full awareness of who and where the quarterbacks reside. It's that clarity that gives this offense the jump on other teams, and avoids the negativity of suspicion and betrayal that can blow up a team's chemistry.
Continuity at the quarterback position is a huge advantage for this team in 2025. The Rams have introduced sweeping changes to the offensive skill positions, based on the fact that this team has the same complement of quarterbacks returning. The latest Will Levis update confirms Rams QB strategy is Grand Master level. The team has not fooled quarterbacks into thinking that they have a shot at starting. And it's admirable that every quarterback on the Rams roster is okay with their assigned roles.
We will have plenty to say about the Rams quarterbacks throughout training camp. But let me leave you with this: The Rams were so confident in all three 2024 quarterbacks that they are all back for 2025, with no new competition. That should tell you everything that you need to know about the team.
As always, thank you for reading.
